How To Go From Facade Design To Fabrication and Back Again In a Heartbeat
May 29th, 2014 by Akio Moriwaki
You may have heard in the news about Façade Design for Fabrication, an offering recently announced by Dassault Systèmes.
Early release clients are thrilled with the impact it’s had on their services, so we thought we’d provide an overview to the AEC Café community.
What is the Façade Design for Fabrication offering?
Façade Design for Fabrication is what we call a “solution experience”—a set of applications built on our 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The following video provides an in-depth tour of the program’s revolutionary capabilities:
The solution is comprised of industry-specific processes. Together they enable AEC professionals to produce high-performance buildings more efficiently and effectively.
For architects and planners, the Integrated Planning module helps you quickly iterate through concepts and validate requirements in real time. You will notice a significant drop in process redundancies, dead-ends, and rework.
Early data-driven decisions can be made based on constructability of the design, before changes become cost-prohibitive.
Then, the Façade Detailing module helps you extend your model through to fabrication, and break it down into assemblies that clearly convey the design intent.
Shop drawings and BOMs (Bill Of Materials) are created automatically from the façade designs, saving time and reducing the potential for error.
Single Source of Truth
“Same page” authoring tools provide a master version of the design for the entire project team. Each object is detailed into a fabrication-ready model, and shop models are created from a single 3D version of the truth.
Modeling from concept through fabrication happens within a single environment.
Plus, the single source of truth is on the cloud, immediately available to all parties.
Without strong collaboration and coordination, a project can result in tremendous waste and cost overruns. Façade Design for Fabrication fosters collaboration among design, construction, fabrication, and building owners, counteracting the silos created by the industry’s point solutions.
Bringing the client into the collaborative innovation space allows teams to gain immediate feedback and ensure projects are on target.
With fast and timely feedback, teams make better decisions earlier in the design process and throughout the building lifecycle.
