Construction for changing environments

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Architects Cristina Murphy and Andrea Bertassi asked the questions at Smartgeometry 2013 held in London April in their presentation “Constructing for an Evolving Ecology”:  How do we design for and within the evolving contemporary city and the cities yet to come?

How can we cope with relationships within and between global supercities and address the dynamics of our times in a world more densely and instantly connected? Who are the agents that generate change in construction industry and in relation to what kind of opportunities? They discussed these questions with Duncan Wilson (Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities), Judit Kimpian (Aedas), and Alan Penn, Dean of the The Bartlett School.

Murphy talked about designing for people for the El Bosque project, in Soyapango, El Salvador. The Toolbox approach application has  been developed to address the housing issues there. El Bosque will become an Integrated Sustainable Low-Income neighborhood in the heart of the metropolitan area of San Salvador, surrounded and defined by nature. Poor people usually settle in areas that are unorganized and are then vulnerable. The El Bosque site is difficult, in that there are floods and it is hilly for social housing. Two violent gangs surround the area and are not connected to the community. People who live here are all poor and desperate.

BricsCAD announces beta version of BricsCAD BIM Module for Windows

Thursday, July 4th, 2013

Bricsys, a globalprovider of dwg engineering design software under the BricsCAD brand, recently announced the availability of the beta version of the BricsCAD BIM Module for the Windows operating system. This add-on module for Building Information Modeling is available for free to users of the Pro and Platinum edition of BricsCAD V13.2 (32-bit).

Customer feedback has and will help shape this beta version into product. BricsCAD’s direct modeling technology aims to push the limits of what can be accomplished with the BIM environment and .dwg.

With the addition of the BricsCAD BIM Module, Bricsys is now providing the building blocks for comprehensive solutions in the AEC market:
* BricsCAD Pro or Platinum software
* BricsCAD BIM Module beta
* Smart connection with the Chapoo collaboration platform

The company will be testing the integration of BricsCAD BIM Module with their Artisan rendering solution. Users of the new beta will be able to use what’s familiar to them – .dwg without any conversion or relying on additional products, in the creation of 3D modeling, BIM and 2D drafting.

Pricing for the different editions of BricsCAD V13.2 ranges from €350/$445 to €845/$985.

Architectural Design Intent Challenged

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Design, documentation, detailing, construction are the parts of the design. “That divide between designer and documentation team is as big a dvide as between the documentation team and the contractor, which BIM has not addressed so far.”

“There is by no means a unified objective in the design team.”

“When does design really end?” A difficult question to answer, and it really doesn’t. “There is this perception that architectural design is something like the napkin sketch. That’s not design. Design isn’t just poking a wall in and giving you a SketchUp model.”

Future plans for IMSI/Design include wearable Google Glass computer and TurboSite

Friday, June 21st, 2013

IMSI/Design announced at the 2013 AIA National Convention that TurboSite will be available for Google Glass when the innovative smart device is launched later this year.

Google Glass for site evaluation to be combined with IMSI/Design’s TurboSite for field reporting.

The combination of Google Glass for site evaluation and TurboSite, a field reporting app, will be a great one. Users will be able to do site inspections without having to carry building plans, digital camera, laptop and other accoutrements.

“Using Google Glass and TurboSite, we’re literally letting someone to walk onto a job site carrying absolutely nothing,” said Royal Farros, company CEO.

Free AutoCAD PDF to DWG and DXF conversion tool available

Friday, June 14th, 2013

A free AutoCAD tool from Cometdocs offer free PDF to DWG and DXF conversion for AutoCAD-designed PDFs and it is well established on the market: http://www.convertpdftoautocad.com/
As CAD drawings are being shared as PDFs for convenience and security reasons, more problems arise with editing and extracting elements from PDFs. Conversion is often the only solution.

Some of its distinct features are:

  • Conversion preserves lines, arcs, scale presets and texts, there is no need for further editing.
  • Even large files (up to 40MB) can be converted swiftly and effectively.
  • According to the strict guidelines of our privacy policy, user emails and uploaded data are deleted after 24h.
  • The service is completely free – please, don’t be confused by ads on the homepage, we support ourselves and keep the service free for you by way of these ads.

Currently Cometdocs don’t support the use of their website via mobile devices, but they do have plans for a mobile app. It should be released within the  next two months.

Prescient platform for AEC

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

In an article in the Wall Street Journal,  it was announced that a software and structural system manufacturing company, Prescient, will debut its integrated and standardized AEC platform at the 2013 American Institute of Architecture (AIA) National Convention, June 20-23 in Denver.

Prescient’s platform works toward streamlining the AEC process for multi-unit buildings such as apartments, condos, senior and assisted living communities, hotels, and student and military dormitories. The software will integrate design and engineering of its framing system with project plans during the architectural design process and generates a bill of materials back to Prescient’s production facility for design-to-production manufacturing. From that information, Prescient can deliver and install the panelized structural system.

Robotic welding is used by Prescient’s manufacturing process to achieve high throughput efficiencies and very tight tolerances. This integrates engineering, architecture, manufacturing and construction into the panelized process.

Building information modeling helps do away with blueprints

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

In a world where blueprints are the backbone of the architectural/construction process, it sounds like heresy to consider replacing blueprints with something else – some thing digital, no less. But the ability of building information modeling (BIM) to eliminate problems before they happen with the use of analysis tools and iPads and other mobile devices, has simplified the whole AEC process. The amount of time, money, and manpower have all been reduced by the use of this technology.

When you see an article in a regional or daily newspaper about a technology topic such as BIM that you’ve known about some time, you know that topic has hit prime time:

Building mis-information has profound impact on AEC industry

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Michelle Addington, Hines Professor of Sustainable Architectural Design at Yale University, is educated as both an architect and engineer whose teaching and research explore energy systems, advanced materials and new technologies, spoke at sg 2013 in April 2013 at the University of London on the topic, “Data and its dis-contents”.
