The Exhibit Floor tells a part of the story of any architectural conference. At the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference in Chicago two weeks ago, you walk in, and the first booths you see contain windows, doors, facades, all necessary features of a built environment. Toward the back are the software vendors, which provide the design and conceptual tools to make the building a reality.

A couple of weeks ago I spoke with Akos Pfemeter of Graphisoft about the new Archicad 18 release. The product Archicad is 30 years old this year, which Pfemeter points out means that “BIM” is 30 years old now, since Graphisoft was the first company to create building information modeling.
The challenge of getting energy evaluations into a building information model has been puzzling developers for a long time now. GRAPHISOFT has offered some energy evaluation capability in its flagship product ArchiCAD, but now the company has announced EcoDesigner STAR to serve highly energy-efficient building design by turning ArchiCAD BIM models into multiple thermal zone Building Energy Models (BEM).
The next generation of a new app from GRAPHISOFT called BIMx is now available in the Apple App Store. The brand new “BIMx Docs” function pack included in the new version provides access to full BIM projects containing the 2D documentation as well as the 3D model. The app’s advanced “Hyper-model” technology allows users to check out BIM projects on their touch screen devices anywhere. People who don’t have BIM training can also use it. This is a tool that can really bring BIM to the construction side of AEC.
