Occupying a strategic position in the residential zone, the seven towers of d’Leedon grow from sunken gardens into the sky – each one articulated as a sequence of petals, generating great diversity and offering stunning views from every apartment, before blending into sky in a series of staggered fingers.

Article source: Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects

On a visit to Mankgaile, a rural village outside Polokwane, to supply the school with computers, members of PetroSA were so moved by the appalling conditions that they decided to make this a pilot project and build a new school for the community. (The school has now been transferred to the Department of Education who will run it.) The school committee and parents played a significant role in preparing the brief and engaging with the professional team throughout the duration of the project ensuring that the building met their requirements and was an asset to the community.

Factoring Offices in Managua, Nicaragua by Organic Scapes and Architecture

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Article source: Organic Scapes and Architecture

The project proposes a flexible and fuid internal space that counteracts with its rigid structural grid, typical of local  office spaces found in Managua.  A series of curved polycarbonate screen walls provide the new Factoring offices with a different spatial distribution, responding to our client’s requests for designing a bank boutique, which ”is really how the financing offices are designed today”.

Toneelschuur in Haarlem, The Netherlands by Mecanoo Architects

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Article source: Mecanoo Architects

A new home

The ‘Toneelschuur’ in Haarlem is a trend-setting firm for the Dutch theatre, dance and movie industries. Each year prominent international theatre and modern dance companies perform in the two theatre halls. The latest movies can be seen in the cinema. Commissioned by the Toneelschuur, cartoonist Joost Swarte made a sketch design for ‘a new home for the Toneelschuur’. This sketch design was a study of the possibilities for moving the theatre to a new location in the intricate fabric of the historical centre of Haarlem. In the design the different functions of the theatre complex are located in different building parts. The new building is dominated by an inclined glass front. This glass wall separates the building from the city, simultaneously creating a mutual connection. Mecanoo developed the sketch design for the new Toneelschuur in collaboration with Joost Swarte.

Loom 2one-Six in Aspen, Colorado by 1 Friday Design Collaborative

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Article source: 1 Friday Design Collaborative

What began as a kitchen remodel within a historic Aspen mining cottage grew to involve a series of artist studio studies for the backyard of the quaint Hyman Avenue residence known as the Pink House. Two very unique directions were initially investigated in direct response to budget concerns and alternate programmatic directions.  Incorporating LEED inspired solutions to take advantage of solar paths and materials with high performance returns was a priority.  For example, the open latticed loft design of the interior space in addition to the window sizing and placements assists in creating a natural heating and cooling feature by allowing the circulation patterns to draft from lower to upper levels accordingly.
