Cleveland Design Competition: A New School Vision in Cleveland, Ohio by Organic Scapes and Architecture

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Article source: Organic Scapes and Architecture

The project proposal for the Campus International School for Downtown Cleveland illustrates the transformation of Cleveland State University’s master plan for converting the area into a dense mixed-use development and with recreation fields. The quotation ”an opportunity to re-evaluate the broader terrain in which children learn and give as great an emphasis on learning environments as others have given the educational philosophies” formed the basis for our proposal.

The proposal of the building is to generate a construction that will be used for conventions, seminars and banquets supporting up to a thousand people. The organic geometry of the building developed under a circular grid, generates continuity between spaces, a stimulation to flow through them. The building sinuous shell line grants it with a kind character.

The West Brabant Water Line is a defense-line consisting of a series of fortresses and cities with inundation areas in the south-west of the Netherlands. It dates from the 17th century but fell into disrepair in the 19th century. When the water line was finally restored, an access bridge across the the moat of one of the fortresses, Fort de Roovere, was needed. This fort now has a new, recreational function and lies on several routes for cycling and hiking.

Le Monolithe in Lyon, France by MVRDV

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Article source: MVRDV

This project concerns the construction of a 30,000 m2 block in the Confluence redevelopment area – in the south of Lyons, where its two rivers meet – to group housing, offices and shops. Both the developer and the municipality wanted a blend of architectural designs and programmes, composed by five different architects, each team handling one part of the whole. Given the desired high density, the first objective was to imagine a site plan that would federate the urban and architectural issues in a coherent set endowed with strong visual identity.

The Whale in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Frits van Dongen, de Architekten Cie.

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Article source: Frits van Dongen, de Architekten Cie.

Borneo-Sporenburg, a former harbour area along the shores of the IJ near Amsterdam’s inner city is intended to resemble in its density the Jordaan, a lively Amsterdam inner city quarter. The developers, however, requested a suburban programme from the municipality. This was granted on the condition that the required density of 100 dwellings per hectare would be achieved. To achieve this urban concentration in a suburban programme, Adriaan Geuze of West 8 introduced a fresh typology: inspired by the surrounding water, he created a sea of low-rise buildings, given rhythm by the variation of blocks and open spaces.

TIPS Fashion Store in Shanghai, China by ///byn

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Article source: ///byn

TIPS Fashion Store is located on the ground floor of an old French Mansion in the heart of the former French Concession of Shanghai.

The preexistence of the historic residential environment drove the design. The house is protected as well as all the existing details inside. The Store is located in the former dining and living room of the house, which kept the original woodworks, moldings, fire places, wood beams… Our design had to be a contemporary contrast within that classical ambience, respecting the existing but drastically changing the appearance of the site.
