Bar Jardim 9 de Abril in Lisbon, Portugal by ASPA Arquitectos

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Article source: ASPA Arquitectos

The 9 April Garden, also known as Albertas, has a belvedere with a panoramic views to the Tagus River and it is surrounded by numerous buildings of historical significance to Lisbon. This space appears as a promontory in a green space filled with tradition, open to the river and shipping, and with stunning views to the imposing right bank of river Tagus  Placed on the roofscape of an existing building which anchors the level change between the garden and the lower plane of the Avenida 24 de Julho, this bar/terrace is built on as single storey structure. Its ephemeral character, lightness of materials, transparency, permeability and reflection promotes and preserves existing views, allowing the structure not to become an obstacle.

The situation of the building, alongside the under construction Centraal Station, the recently complete ‘New Babylon’ housing and mixed use complex, and a large underground parking garage, will further serve to strengthen and unify this highly visible site in the center of the city. Allariz International Garden Festival 2011

1st Jury Prize

Whatever culture fashion is part of, whatever time and place it refers to, its essence finds its roots in the characteristics of the human body. Only the being’s dimensions and proportions matter. Its peculiarities, its flaws, its disadvantages are sublimed by creation and become the assets, the basis, the nourishing roots of fashion. They structure its path, define its substance, and guide its function. Static and still when unworn, fashion transforms itself; it evolves in space once inhabited. It also shelters life. It takes over, welcomes and protects it. Once wrapped around the being, fashion, lifeless until then, comes alive.

Cienna Ultralounge in New York by Bluarch Architecture + Interiors + Lighting

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Article source: Bluarch Architecture

Cienna Ultralounge is a venue in the heart of Astoria [Queens, NY] designed to offer the ultimate entertainment experience to the discerning New York crowd. If Cienna Restaurant is an exercise on experiential lightness, Cienna Ultralounge is an essay on softness. This project is conceptually linked to the mathematical clarification of the shape of a silk cocoon via a cosine Fourier series. Formally, the space transposes such geometric formalization into a meandering system of openings on the ceiling and walls.

  • Location: New York, USA
  • Software used: The person who provides the lighting software installed a DMX controller at the DJ booth, which is a software to control the lighting – brightness, color, timing, action by sounds/music, etc…All of the LED lights above the acrylic rods are controlled by the software. The actual design of the space was tested in 3D max prior to construction, as is done for most of our projects since we employ organic forms and design systems that have often never been done before.
