Joan Puigbert Primary School in Girona, Spain by Mias Arquitectes

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Article source: Mias Arquitectes

Annexa-Joan Puigbert is the name of the school that occupies a T-shaped building from the 50s of the 20th century. Its main building lies along the main street, and in the middle point there is another building which is perpendicular. The building’s topographical position is strange, due to the steep hill where the school was built.

Doe Bay Cabin in Orcas Island, Washington by Heliotrope Architects

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Article source: Heliotrope Architects

Our clients for this project have been traveling regularly to Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island for two decades.  Now with two young children they have formalized their affection for the place by purchasing property located a short walk from the resort.   We were challenged to design a modest cabin in size and cost (but not in character) that captures the spirit of this place while reflecting the Japanese and Chinese heritage of the owners.

House in Hatsugano, Japan by Horibe Naoko Architect Office

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Article source: Horibe Naoko Architect Office

This lot is bordered by a road on the west and boxed in by houses on the south, north, and east. Houses will also be built across the road to the west, so our main challenge was securing adequate privacy and natural light. As a result, we decided to design the building around a central courtyard. Although the facade appears monolithic from the street, the instant the front door is opened one is confronted by an open, light-filled courtyard. The plan on the first and second floors allows residents to circle around the courtyard as they move from room to room, almost as if they were going for a walk within their own home.

Urban Living XXL in Boston, Massachusetts in Ruhl Walker Architects

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Article source: Ruhl Walker Architects

This Boston loft – nearly 5,000 SF with 18-foot high ceilings – presented a number of amazing opportunities and more than a few challenges.  Chief among the opportunities was amplifying the immensity of the central living space – one of the largest in the city – while making an understandable and livable family house.  Two monolithic organizing walls and a floating ceiling plane anchor the space and orient the occupant without disturbing its vastness or disrupting sightlines.
