Layered House in Hokkaido, Japan by Jun Igarashi Architects

March 14th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

The site is located in the east of Hokkaido, the old city area of Saroma-cho and there is a road in the north side. The warehouses of the farm co-op stand along this street, and there is much traffic density. There is the office of the farm co-op in the East, and a warehouse is adjacent in the west. In the south, there is a small garden, and the house of parents of client is built. Jun Igarashi Architects designed the space for family(four persons) in this place. Space with the directionality to the south side was thought at first by the situation of the site outskirts and this place. They tried to solve space problem with a connection to the outside with a buffering space.

In any kind of constitution, Jun Igarashi Architects think that the design of architecture is an act to make a certain closed-door room on the earth. They can have a sense called the ease in my hand by “not seen in a person” or “the sense of distance of persons or the town.” “House of Trough” and ” Rectangle of Light” are the space with high closed-door room nature. In even “Layered House”, the architects thought about the buffering space by relations with the environment aimed at the subject of space and the creation of a new place and approached the closed-door room.

The existence of “the light” becomes big when you raise this closed-door room feeling. Common light of three space is airlight. The room is full of the state called the airlight unlike a direct light. Light and a shadow are in a condition to be able to live together. A state of the light and the closed-door room nature lead to a sense called the ease. These are the stories about states.

The function of each of the many rooms is gathered beside the gate type at “Layered House”. This is “places to stay”. That is like hiding in the stage hem. Their spaces and the living dining are constructed of one space. A sense to hide while being connected produces a moderate sense of distance between places to stay. By semi-transparent curtains, light and the sense of distance between places to stay changes.
