Light Box in Frederiksberg, Denmark by WE Architecture

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Light Box is an extension of the existing high school of Falkonergården. The building is a Danish international style complex worthy of preservation. As a result of increasing popularity and the addition of an athletic department, Falkonergården is in high lack of improved gym facilities and a larger assembly hall.

THIN FLATS in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia by Plumbob Llc.

Friday, April 15th, 2011

First LEED-H Platinum duplex residences in the U.S.A.

This eight unit residential project explores the highly efficient and architecturally latent potentials hidden within the traditional form of the Philadelphia “Row” home. The vertical rhythm, regularity yet diversity of this most prevalent residential urban typology was the primary source of inspiration for this experiment. Thin faces fronting both Laurel and Pollard Streets mask and blur conventional lines of demarcation between all eight duplex dwellings both vertically and horizontally. In the process, a degree of density yet expansiveness uncommon to the thin space of the urban duplex emerges.  The Philadelphia “Row” is by nature a long, thin slice of dense, sustainable, urban space, typically ‘light-deficient’ and insular at its core. Thin Flats questions this traditional ‘deficiency’ by spatially reconfiguring the relationship between the interior and it’s skin such that its ‘core’ is flooded with light and air. This skin also affords each room on the ‘periphery’ of the dwelling the ability to step outside, and yet remain within the skin.

Friday, April 15th, 2011

The university required a space in which to impart regulated and continuous education, lodge the administration’s office, a library and the assembly room. The building meets all these requirements divided in four volumes. The first three volumes are destined to hold the educational and administration sections, and are formed with specific characteristics for the development of its activities; it is in contact with the ground and organized in such way that can function autonomously.

Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Art in Aqaba, Jordan by Symbiosis Design Limited

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

‘In creating film one has to know how to take flight with light and understand the nature of its nature; to become a shadow and converse with ambiguity touching it but never gripping it; to understand the concept of contrasting harmony and how opposites bow to each other and sometimes dance in no less capacity than utterly consumed and locked souls; to travel with raw sound, whispers and sometimes silence itself and meet enchantment yet sense the most silent scream to be the loudest; to adopt the gentle breeze and learn a lesson or two on the prolific powers of gentle sways; to know how to become absolutely drunk and utterly intoxicated on a good conversation; to be able to ride chaos and make good sense of it; to use ice cold that is actually hot and make it unarguably cool; to know men and women who wear their hearts on their faces; to converse with the aura of objects and discover the person within each; to erase the line between genius and insanity and discover how to inexhaustibly deconstruct and reconstruct souls and suspend time in between, …’ Khalid Nahhas.
