Villa Old Oaks in Ljubljana, Slovenia by OFIS Arhitekti

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

The private client for this project convoked a proper architectural competition for five invited offices, the idea being to choose an architect for his new residence. The residence is situated in a new neighbourhood of six larger villas. The unique feature of the site is a splendid view of a stand of oak trees that are over a hundred years old. The terrain slopes down towards these trees. To guarantee that most of the major spaces will have access to this view, the house is organised in stepped levels following the terrain. The outline of the house keeps to the shape of the plot of land, minus four metres all around, the minimum distance Slovenian law calls for vis-à-vis one’s neighbours.

Leicester House in Greater Asheville, North Carolina by SPG Architects

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

This hilltop residence, located at the edge of a wooded knoll in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, has expansive southern and western views.  Approaching the house through these woods, one arrives at a striking single story façade of corten steel in a wood frame. A hint of the views is provided through the glass door, but it is not until entry that the full impact of the hilltop views can be experienced. The rear glass walls, which face West and South, are shielded by large overhangs and open to rolling farmland below and the mountains beyond.

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Since the year 2000, the City of Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers), Quebec, Canada, is developing a plan to urbanize a site formerly occupied by a paper mill on the banks of the Saint-Laurent and Saint-Maurice rivers. As the development’s masterpiece, the city proposes to build a 10,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre. The site’s exceptional location between the downtown area and the water calls for a landmark building.
