RENOVATION TO AN EXISTING HOUSE IN Mt LAVANIA, SRI LANKA by Damith Premathilake designed using SketchUp

May 7th, 2011 by Sumit Singhal

Architectural Zen oasis amidst the congested surroundings

The recent house renovation done by architect Damith Premathilake could be perceived as a spatial composition in Zen. The spaces are evocative of ritualistic living. The interiors are carefully crafted to create spaces of art and inspire creative habitation. It is intimate yet seems open and spacious. It is remarkable given all the major problems associated with the existing house how the architect has transformed the house into a little gem.

Living room

The four bedroom house was built in the 1960’s in a semi-urban, highly residential area in Mt. Lavania. Like most homes built in congested areas it lacked sufficient daylight and proper natural ventilation. The interior was dark and the bedrooms had inadequate circulation space.

The client approached the architect to re-design the home within a small budget to suit their busy lifestyle and the tropical climate. The new design also had to include 3 covered carparks and parking space for 5 vehicles. To resolve the main issue concerning natural lighting and ventilation the architect has cleverly removed the previous carport located in front of the house.

The relocation of the parking facility to the side of the house has allowed the front entrance to be more open. The architect has taken advantage of the extra space by adding a water feature. The water is placed as the new heart of the house breathing life to the connecting spaces and beyond. The bedrooms are fitted with specifically designed furniture and undressed of unnecessary adornments to gain additional space. In theory the changes the architect has made are subtle but the affect of these changes are so phenomenal.
