MIX-USE COMPLEX in BEIJING, CHINA

When it is thought about cities, it is not about urban plans, or diagrams. It is about the capacity of cities to provide endless possibilities of living. It is really the experience of shapes and shadows, the experience of reflections, textures and so on… what create the urban experience.

Qianhai Port City in Qianhai, China by OMA Architect

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Situated at the threshold of Hong Kong and Mainland China, Qianhai occupies a position of strategic significance in the Pearl River Delta. The planned intensification of transport through the site renders inevitable its emergence as a new center. The question is not whether Qianhai will develop, but how? If successful, a new city center in Qianhai could fulfill Shenzhen’s coastal ambitions and establish a node for interaction between various components of the PRD.

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Victoria & Albert Museum – 1:1 Architects Build Small Spaces (exhibition 2010).

Cloud chamber

We envisage the Cloud chamber as a retreat detached from everyday life, in part a direct response to the urban context of the V&A and its surroundings, but also a vehicle for the public to engage with and experience architectural scale and space at first hand. The aim is both a visual and physical experience of the tension between a direct and expressive exterior and a sensual, surprising and challenging interior.

Mobile Cubes in Paris, France by Atelier 37.2

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

These mobile cubes are made of 3mm micro-perforated steel. The perforations are graphic, functional and narrative. They create a slight transparency that conveys a sense of mystery to the scene inside the cube. They preserve intimacy while allowing air circulation. One side of the cube is to be deciphered: famous photographers’ quotes are cut out of steel in Braille alphabet.

Nuova Sede Centro Edile Andrea Palladio in Vicenza, Italy by OFL Architecture

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

The new Andrea Palladio Building Center is made of a structural skin evoking nature, like tree branches that by weaving themselves create a dynamic façade made of steel and glass. The arches on the ground floor evoke the architecture of the Renaissance, and suggest the idea of an ethical and emotional architecture. Steel and glass together, combined as something organic and dynamic, allow the building to be in harmony with the context. The shielding front is made of mirror glass panels with a thickness of 10 mm. They have the double function of reflecting the natural environment and protecting the building from the sun. The glazed turbots, generated by the external structure, and the plastic tubes that pervade the entire building have been designed in order to enable the sectors to obtain an adequate level of lighting comfort.

Tree House in Tokyo, Japan by Mount Fuji Architects Studio

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

This house for a couple is built in a residential area on a gentle hill in the northern Tokyo. The site is located at the top of a hill connected with a narrow path leading to the actual building lot. The ground level is gradually climbing higher from edge of the site. Although the site has particular sense of oppression and dusky feel, and the actual building lot is completely enclosed by the adjacent houses, we realized with the characteristic of the place as the depths of the urban condition without exposing to the outside, and secluded from the town. In this case, it is more suitable to extend the volume vertically rather than horizontally. Similar reason can be found in the nature that a tree enclosed by other tall trees in a deep forest tends to have vertical directivity for its growth.
