Rennes metro station in Rennes, France by Atelier Zündel & Cristea

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

At the start, we wanted to define for ourselves what a metro station is: it acts as a marker along the metro line’s trajectory, an easily accessible public space with simple and fluid pathways, clear and intelligible signage. Our project, addressing the metro station stop “Gare (Train station) – Line B” in Rennes, attempts to render concrete and visible this new conception of the metro’s urban significance by concentrating on intelligibility and on the quality of the station’s space.

Galileo Apartment Building in Colonia Polanco, Mexico by Pascal Arquitectos

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Article source: Pascal Arquitectos

Residential building located in Polanco in which  it’s façade achieves transparency and at the same time privacy by combining different cristal, wood and concrete opacities. A contrasted dialogue with the sorrounding constructions takes place, setting as well a guideline towards the  modernity of what should be developed in the future; in the inside, all areas are naturally illuminated and ventilated without being exposed to the exterior. The combination of all these elements with the side apparent concrete facades and balconies, breaks up and emphasize the building volume rigidity. The back façade follows the same design tendency although with a different construction system.

Sheik Zayed Library, Dubai Seven in UAE by Cheungvogl

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Metaphorically, the structural design is rooted deeply into the ancient culture of Dubai. Respecting traditional disciplines and incorporating the significance of organic forms, symbols and patterns, the design seeks to redefine traditions as well as continues to test new boundaries for the future. As we critically question the ‘whys’ and ‘how’s’, finding the reasons for everything, there is no room for imitations. This symbol must be a unique phenomenon – a flower growing out of the desert ground. Following the rational thinking of looking deeper into nature and plant structure such as bamboo, we understand that the structure is made up of multiple strands of fibre, tightly knitted together.

Eden Apartments in Sydney, Australia by Tony Owen Partners

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

The latest building by Tony Owen blurs the line between architecture and urban billboard. Work has commenced on the EDEN apartments in Sydney. This infill project is located in a varied and complex part of the Sydney cityscape and is visible from many vantages. The office sought to explore the possibilities of adding to the tapestry as a piece of art in the urban landscape. In a unique approach, the final image was chosen from an on-line poll of various options to allow the public to decide the streetscape of their city.

Mikve Rajel in Lomas de Tecamachalco, México by Pascal Arquitectos

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

The Mikve is the  ritual bath of purification in the Jewish religion.  It is possible diving in fresh spring water, or in a place specially dedicated to it, fed by rainwater that must be collected, stored and communicated to the vessel that is called a Mikve. All this must be made under a very strict set of rules related to the degree of purity of water. These rules also include the use of materials, architectural measures and water treatment.

Living Roof in Berlin, Germany by NAU Architect

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

The Living Roof offers you the essence of the city. It condenses all the functions of daily life into a compact and selfsustaining capsule, intended for urban rooftops, but ready to be airlifted into the savanna at short notice. The minimal interior allows for concentrated thought and recuperation, while the highly efficient enclosure helps resolve one of the paradoxes of modern life: the contemporary citizen seeks mobility, but also wants to tread softly on the environment. For just this sort of traveler, NAU has designed the Living Roof, the first short-term housing unit to produce more energy than it consumes.
