Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Article source: Asymptote architecture

As a signature architectural statement, the Strata Tower’s articulate, striking physical presence seeks to encapsulate meaning through the use of abstract form drawn from both local cultural landscapes and motifs and dynamic forces of global influence. The Strata Tower’s design utilizes primarily mathematical means in its design to achieve both a poetic, as well as highly pertinent, architecture for the UAE, a region in flux with ambitions for continued rapid growth.

Cradle in Santa Monica, California by Ball-Nogues Studio

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Article source: Ball-Nogues Studio

Commissioned by the City of Santa Monica, Cradle is situated on the exterior wall of a parking structure at a shopping mall – originally designed by Frank Gehry.  The site is near the beach, and is heavily trafficked by tourists on foot and in automobiles. An aggregation of mirror polished stainless steel spheres, the sculpture functions structurally like an enormous Newton’s Cradle – the ubiquitous toy found on the desktops of corporate executives in Hollywood films. Each ball is suspended by a cable from a point on the wall and locked in position by a combination of gravity and neighboring balls. The whole array reflects distorted images of passersby.

Gran Casino Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar, Spain by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Article source: b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos

The Gran Casino Costa Brava, located in the historic gardens of the Gran Hotel Monterrey in the centre of Lloret de Mar (Girona), is based on a distinctive environmental and architectural project by b720 Arquitectos, headed by Fermín Vázquez. At once practical and singular, the design of the new casino breaks with convention by approaching the complex as a unified structure that rises out of the ground. The building is divided into three clearly differentiated levels that are integrated in the surrounding environment.

House in Ookayama in Tokyo, Japan by Torafu Architects

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Article source: Torafu Architects

A Collection of Large Furniture

Two generations live in this three-storied wooden house located in a Tokyo residential area. The site corresponds to a 4.7 m wide × 16.5 m long fringe of the land where the owner’s parents lived. Furthermore, the site is enclosed by buildings on three sides while its northern side abuts directly on the street. The layout was designed to alleviate the impression of narrowness of the frontage in as much as possible and make the best use of the site’s conditions within the maximum volume allowed by setback restrictions. To minimize pressure from the corridor on the frontage path we devised a basic plan that placed the entrance and stairs at the center while the bedroom and public areas are divided on a north-south axis.
