Fort York National Historic Site Visitor Centre in Toronto, Canada by Patkau Architects Inc.

Fort York Heritage

Fort York, considered the birthplace of Toronto, is a National Historic Site. It represents the single most important cultural heritage link to British military and social history remaining in the City of Toronto. The Fort’s layered historical themes and associations with a rich archaeological past re-enforces the need for a sensitivity in design to both the existing above-ground cultural heritage resources and the below-ground archaeological resources. The larger challenge of this project is not only to present cultural heritage and preserve archaeological resources but also to contribute in making the social, military and intangible histories of this site more present and palpable.

Pradolongo Housing in Madrid, Spain by Wiel Arets Architects

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

Since the end of the Francisco Franco era, when government spending was drastically cut in Spain, the demand for social housing has steadily continued to rise. Taking into consideration eighty percent of Spain’s population are homeowners and the citizens’ strong candid views towards rental housing – the availability of affordable public housing has slowly dwindled. For the past 25 years, Empresa Municipal de la Vivienda y el Suelo de Madrid (EMVS), the state-run housing association, has been spearheading architectural innovation throughout Madrid. By inviting internationally renowned foreign architects to team-up with local firms – the EMVS is rethinking the notion of modern-day social housing in Spain.

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Article source: Studio za Arhitekturu

The location of the planned construction is part of the central city area where transformation of the existing building structure is in process. Thanks to its position, next to the railway line, by the beginning of the last century this area was selected for construction of different industrial complexes, warehouses, and public services. During the last ten years, this transformation has intensified, with the tendency of replacing industrial and public service facilities with pronouncedly high-rise structures, built in corresponding standards.
