Located on a flat, one acre flag lot with neighbors close to the front and side yards, this 4,000 square foot house is configured of three primary volumes arranged in an ‘C’ that frame the expansive, southern view of an adjacent, agricultural reserve. This view serves as a backdrop to an interwoven composition of interior and exterior spaces.
Many masters of Russian cinema, from the introduction of Lumière Brothers to Russia, then Vertov, Eisenstien, Tarkovsky and Sokurov to name a few, have provided us with unimaginable vision of how our world can be seen from a different perspective. Through their evolving art of cinema, not only do its visuals stimulate us but furthermore, our subconscious creates a deeper imagination to the contents we literally experience. Cinema world allows us to explore the unknown territory that cannot be experienced in the reality.

This project is for a new single family residence located in the Mt. Washington hills of Los Angeles. The property is a small (3,600 s.f.) descending lot with an approximately 2:1 slope facing slightly southwest and within the upper portion of a ravine. Diagonally to the west is a view of downtown and directly across lie a scattered array of houses on a similar slope. The area is characterized by tight winding streets with an eclectic range of houses fronting directly on them. Most of the structures are direct manifestations of the complicated zoning laws that govern the area; maximizing height restrictions, uncovered decks that extend 5 feet beyond the envelope, skirts that extend all the way to the ground, etc. This results in a typology that seems more appropriate for the flats of L.A. and clearly signals the end of the possibility of the case-study experiments not so long ago.
In the historical center of the small Tokaj village, on a plot directly adjacent to a 15th century church, our task entailed the design of a winery that is to produce quality Tokaj wines. The basic concept underlying the building’s design was to build a new winery by making use of all valuable elements of the greatly remodeled, original stone building. Thus, the existing, traditionally laid stone walls had been integrated into the new building so as to result in a house that now displays these original elements. It has turned out only upon uncovering of the small house, i.e. after removal of layers of plaster, that beautiful stone walls had been hidden there for several hundred years. As a modern, dry-laid structure, the new facades of the building as well as its roof have been made of yellow-grey stone originating from nearby Mád. The stone panels on the roof are laid in a manner so as to recall the original tile-covered house, yet with the roof planes already implying a new and progressive mass.
The approach of this proposal has been to develop a residential area with a strong connection to the context. By being located on the very edge, where the city and the forest merge together, there has been given an unique opportunity to make an area in the city and in the forest at the same time with the advances it is giving.

Law and Accounting Offices – House Balkenhol
This building is protected under historic preservation laws and was renovated as a professional leasing property for law offices and an accounting firm. Built on a massive plinth, two facades are adorned with elaborate sandstone decorations in the neo-classic style. Due to decades of vacancy and neglect, the bearing capacity of the floors no longer met code and the entire building, from the basement to the roof rafters, was gutted. The outer envelope was the only remnant of the original structure to remain intact.

This project is a display case for a record collection. Vinyl albums have somewhat of a retro/cult status within contemporary culture that is generated from the unique sound it produces as well as the cover art that defines the packaging. The display case is designed in order to frame the collection and heighten its status as a cultural artifact within the domestic setting.
The ¾ acre site of the Roberts Residence is bound by, a residential street along its west edge, single-family detached residences on adjacent lots to the north and south, and a wooded park towards the rear. At the front of the site along the street edge the site drops almost immediately by 8 feet. Only the roof of the house is visible from the street. The site continues to slope gently dipping another 12 feet until it reaches the wooded park to the rear of the site.
