Turnaccommodatie Nieuw Welgelegen is a sports hall dedicated to gymnastics; it will not be used for any other sports. Four individual gymnastics clubs combine efforts in this new facility. TNW is the 3rd and probably last building in the redevelopment of a sports complex in the center of Utrecht. Soccer ‘temple’ Zwaluwen Utrecht 1911 was already completed in 2006 and a supersized ‘multifunctional accommodation’, a school combined with sports facilities, will open soon.

Designed for a couple and sited in a hilly suburban area of Maastricht near the Netherlands-Belgium border, the H House was designed for a couple with a strong interest in the arts. The clients formerly occupied a home directly adjacent to the site before appointing Wiel Arets Architects to design what would become their new home, the H House. Individually an actor and a dancer, and dually landscape architects, the owners are able to keep their landscaping skills honed in the formal garden behind the house, which they occasionally open to the public.
The design process for this large (600m2) supralocal pharmacy forced us to shift our viewpoint and come up with a virtual building—a placebo pharmacy. The octagonal shape of the existing structure was re-formed into a cylinder in order to create a spiral which seeks to converse with the rapid motion on Vouliagmenis Avenue, the urban artery on which the building stands. The panels of the façade are perforated using Braille, which both alludes to the system’s use on pharmaceutical packaging and boosts visibility by allowing the light to find its way into the interior. The new facade also protects the interior while acting as a lure for passers-by. Inside, the product display mirrors the circular frontage, while a ramp up to the upper level extends the dynamism of the exterior spiral into the interior space.
Loop House is the residence for a producer of film music and his parents. The ‘infinite’ plan is divided into 3 parts, a shared domain with kitchen, dining and living room and the private rooms for both parties.
The brief for the XIII Arquine International Contest asked participants design a Media Park, an ‘environment for free and safe interaction that can also be a space for culture and learning’, much in the tradition of the successful library parks in Medellin, Colombia , while reactivating an emblematic, but semi-abandoned site of Ciudad Juarez, the PRONAF polygon (National Border Program of Mexico), built in 1961 with the intention of attracting people from the neighbor city of EI Paso, Texas. The 1961 project saw two of Mexico’s most prominent architects of the time -Pedro Ramirez Vazquez and Mario Pani-design buildings which in the past 2 decades have become surrounded by parking lots, and eaten by a now decaying mall respectively. The driving idea guiding our project stems from the challenge of responding to the necessity for urban integration and creating optimum comfort for the residence’s occupants in a convivial and intimate environment.
The context
The project for a student residence was considered in the context of the urban fabric of the La Chapelle district in Paris and its role in its evolution. The plot is on the corner of rue Philippe de Girard and rue Pajol in the 18th arrondissement, close to the ZAC Pajol, an ambitious redevelopment of former railway yards, on which social, cultural and sports amenities are currently being created. The district is a very heterogeneous mixture of Haussmannian residential buildings, factories and workshops, and therefore has a richness and wide diversity of situations unusual within Paris itself.
Overseeing Oryuk Island and the newly established Marina, the site is located on a spectacular seashore cliff. The objective of this limited invited design competition is to create a next generation resort-style luxury condominium and a boutique hotel complex which capitalize the ‘amazing view experience’ and provide a ‘maximum privacy’. By taking advantage of the site condition, we have actively adopted ‘terrace’ concept throughout the site; by locating terraced residences on a cliff edge, the residents are able to experience an ‘undisturbed’ view of the sea as well as ‘open’ residential park in between the villa towers and terrace housing. We have isolated a single detached villa zone into a ‘gated-community’; thus provide an increased ‘security’ for the residents. Single detached units are ‘Villa Bar-view’ (Entertainment House) and ‘chateau W-Peaks’ (two generation, two entry house). Cluster Housing is comprised of two types: ‘House of Hanging Garden’ (Terrace House) and ‘Casa Cristallo’ (Crystal Cube Tower Housing).
“Casa Paz”, is located in a housing development built in the 60’s, approximately 70Km. outside of Madrid. The area is considered a conventional residential zone, of no specific architectural interest, built using heterogeneous topologies and materials. The housing development, called Rio Cofio, is located on the outskirts of the village Robledo de Chavela; there at the edge of a cliff, a 1,400 m2 steeply sloped lot overlooks a small river.

The Truffle is a piece of nature built with earth, full of air. A space within a stone that sits on the ground and blends with the territory. It camouflages, by emulating the processes of mineral formation in its structure, and integrates with the natural environment, complying with its laws.
