Montevideo 285 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil by Vazio S/A designed using AutoCAD and SketchUp

Montevideo 285 references the ceiling height of old houses, brings with it the balconies of Baroque houses (see 5th floor) and seeks architectural elements that could improve the quality of the products currently offered in the local real estate market — a nauseating sameness.

  • Architect: Vazio S/A
  • Name of Project: Montevideo 285
  • Location: Belo Horizonte, Brazil
  • Plot area: 480m2
  • Built area: 1.1580m2
  • Date of project: 2008
  • Date of works: 2008-2011
  • Photos: Leonardo Finotti, Eduardo Eckenfels, Carlos M Teixeira
  • Terrain, location and surroundings: Very narrow site (12x40m) located in a upper-middle class neighborhood and sandwiched between buildings of similar typology.
  • Software used: AutoCAD and SketchUp

All the rooms of extended stay (living rooms and bedrooms) face the morning sun and are protected by metal grilles that work as sun shades and elements to provide privacy vis-à-vis the close neighbors. Kitchen and toilets face the (hot) west side, yet a building block 6m away protects them from the west considerably.

285 Montevideo is a cobblestone as a consequence of the envelope determined by the strict local Building Regulations. An apartment has a larger plan (5th floor), with the cantilever toward the only side of the volume not bounded by the Building Regulations (the backyard). In section, the project explores the maximum height allowed by the Regulations and generates differentiated ceiling heights, with three-step stairs inside the rooms resembling the internal space of a house; and a 3m cantilever accentuating the 5th floor’s differences (larger windows, larger ceiling height, larger bedroom, balcony wrapping the whole floor, etc).

The grey façade has planting boxes with white drainage pipes; the grilles sunshades also working as support for the fountainbushes’ (Russelia equisetiformis) growth.

The plan is very conventional and can meet a traditional family, an important fact in a city rather closed to new ideas, such as Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
