Aptos Retreat Residence by CCS Architecture

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Article source: CCS Architecture

This project was designed for a San Francisco couple with six children – with ages ranging from high school to college. The property is located inland from the beach town of Aptos, California in the Santa Cruz Mountains, near the city of Santa Cruz.  The 20-acre site has ocean and mountain views and is about five miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. The family desired a setting that would be casual and rustic, and that would incorporate sustainable features to minimize the home’s carbon footprint. Diverse activities were part of the design program, including; entertaining, cooking, tanning, swimming, archery, horseshoes, gardening, and wood-splitting.

Article source: Architecture Republic

The client, John Graham, an artist based in Dublin, required a new studio space at the end of his garden. Due to the format of his work he needed to be able to lay it out and observe from a height. This was the premise from which the design emerged.

Doggers Corner in Den Helder, The Netherlands by LEVS architecten

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Article source: LEVS architecten

Doggers Corner lies near Den Helder in the North of Holland. It is placed in the landscape like a fortress. A paradoxical task: a closed juvenile institute with maximum security in combination with an environment where 144 juvenile residents between the ages of 12 and 18 can receive optimal treatment. The open and relaxed design of the Federal Institute for Youths (RIJ) makes for a privileged environment inside the protection and limitations of a wall.

Conversion and Extension of Sailer House, Salzburg

The owners of a Salzburg villa, wanted to add a weather-protected space that could be used all year round and would connect the house with the garden. Our main interest concerned the opening of the house to the south-sided garden. We created a large terrace reaching to the border of the property, on which we placed the garden room of glass and a pergola with tension ropes to provide shadow through plants or textiles. The arrangement of living room (music room), glass house, pergola, terrace, and a garden wall at the side-axis of the building create a chain of interwoven spaces, each closed and protected to a different degree.

Villa GM in Marina di Ragusa, Sicily by Architrend Architecture

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Article source: Architrend Architecture

This villa, like a garden pavilion hung with a spectacular view of the sea, is part of a complex of houses located in Marina di Ragusa, the seafaring village of Ragusa, on a plot of land with beautiful views overlooking the Mediterranean and a stretch of coast in the direction of the island of Malta, distant about sixty miles off, and that in a bright day you can see clearly.  The design of the villa derives from the influence exercised by the program of the Case Study Houses (CSH) implemented in the 50’s by John Entenza and the magazine he founded “Art & Architecture”.
