Velodrome and Olympic Swimming Pool in Berlin, Germany by Dominique Perrault Architecture

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Article source: DPA

This project is bound up with the reunification of the two Germany. It was related to the wish of a city, Berlin, then about to become the capital, to be nominated for the Olympic Games in the year 2000. From the first, there was a conjunction of the political ambitions of the Berlin Senate, an extremely strong desire for the redeployment and linking together of the two parts of the city, and a unifying project, the Olympic project, that enabled the planners to develop not only the setting up of a certain number of sporting facilities, but also a certain number of networks to serve these sporting facilities.

Article source: Christ Christ architekten gmbh

This specific construction assignment is a central topic of today’s urban development: the roof area as building site which can be covered with independent buildings – urban compression by utilization of roof areas as valuable building land.  Thereby the architect is always confronted with the question of how to handle with the existing building in a contemporary sense. In the case of House S a 60´s bungalow, built by interior architect Wilfried Hilger for himself and his family.

Private office in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina by Firma d.o.o.

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Article source: Firma d.o.o.

Office of the architectural design studio “Firma” is situated in a converted apartment of an early 20th century building in Sarajevo (dating back from the Austro-Hungarian period). The studio’s interior of cca 65 m2 comprises of two rooms an enfilade, and a small kitchen and toilette. The principal design objectives were based on the idea to create a bright and “optimistic” space, by employing white, reflective surfaces and mirrors, which both amplify natural lighting, and visually expand relatively small space. Monochromatic color scheme (black and white) within the interior, provides a „neutral background“ for a working place such as an architectural office, but it also enables a high contrast with the window views – slates and bricks of the rooftops and chimneys of the neighboring buildings.

The shape of the stadium is determined by the intersection, the collision of two circles.  It is a stadium with two centers, two sectors entering into conflict, and the design features the architectural resolution of this conflict.  Its shape thus symbolizes the relationship between the two clubs, which share the field of play without losing their individual identities.

Renovations in an old watermill, Lanjarón, Granada

The Lanjarón municipality is on the southern flank of Sierra Nevada. It is famous for its crafts, its honey and the quality of its medicinal water, including one of Spain’s most famous spas. The museum project began with a search for a site favoured by the presence of the water in natural conditions. The chosen area is at the entrance to the Sierra Nevada Regional Park, alongside the Lanjarón River and an irrigation ditch that runs around several old buildings that were formerly the municipal abattoir. The museum is installed in on this site to safeguard the natural environment from property speculation with the design of a pedestrian itinerary that connects the new activity with the water infrastructure and several examples of traditional architecture, including watermills and an old public laundry.

Baixa Bar in Porto, Portugal by José Carlos Cruz Arquitecto

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Article source: José Carlos Cruz

For years, Porto Downtown was a day-time zone. This was the civic center and  buildings were occupied by offices and commercial stores. The gentrification phenomenon made people move to periferic and cheaper zones, leaving housing buildings empty and a desert atmosphere at night.
