ParaSol by Office for Design & Architecture

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

Article source: Office for Design & Architecture

The ParaSol is a rooftop shading structure that produces a constant shadow by tracing the sun’s rays.  Through advanced technology, ODA calculated and predicted the solar exposure for the site while taking into consideration all the contextual parameters of the surrounding buildings.  The ParaSol form emerges through a process of sculptural optimization where 90 models (each one producing an ideal shadow for a different day) were tested to form a hybrid prototype.  This outcome creates a high performance shading structure in a singular, spectacular object, shaping the identity for the rooftop while improving its micro-climate.

Atlanta History Center in Georgia by Meridian 105 Architecture

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

Article source: Meridian 105 Architecture

The Atlanta History Center project is a partial interior renovation of the existing building.  The building’s exterior is addressed with the intent of maintaining a large portion of the current structure while achieving a transformation of image.  The History Center fulfills a dual purpose, operating as a traditional museum and exhibit space on the mission of the Historical Society, and acting as a revenue generating event space. The current building, characterized by corridor-style circulation and partitioned rooms challenges the use of each function, creating a circulation driven by destination rather than exploration. Because of the shortcomings of the original design, the existing history center does not support the mission and revenue goals of the historical society. This project addresses this problem.

Rowing Center in Alange, Spain by José María Sánchez García

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: José María Sánchez García

The Rowing and Canoeing Centre is located near the Alange reservoir and tries to be as neutral as possible with the environment.  It is configured by a large pedestal and a light deck, creating between them a platform that dialogues with the landscape, looking over the water, the shore, the boats. It’s like a big veranda, a balcony, which focuses on the movements toward the reservoir, with paths that are created to “look” and to “stay”.

Ellis St Apartments in Chatswood, New South Wales, Australia by Utz Sanby Architects

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: Utz Sanby Architects

The apartments consist of a mix of 1 and 2 bedrooms with large outdoor terraces, drying areas, natural ventilation and an abundance of natural light. The upper storey apartments are two storeys. Planning codes required 30% of these units to be adaptable. Overall height was restricted to 3 storeys, but allowed underground car parking and an “attic” storey.

White Monolith in Mistelbach, Austria by LOSTINARCHITECTURE (designed using AutoCAD and 3dS Max)

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: LOSTINARCHITECTURE

In the rural Weinviertel region of Lower Austria individual examples of new architecture are generally introduced with caution and reticence. This makes it all the more surprising when suddenly, on a busy street in the densely built-up part of the town of Mistelbach (population 13,000), not far from the main square, you come across a white monolith that speaks a self-assured architectural language.

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: Frits van Dongen, de Architekten Cie.

The Sovereign pop venue is an icon for musical expression, situated at a prominent location in Hilversum. It lies within walking distance from the railway station, at a major crossroads in the inner-city road network, and is clearly visible from the train. As a consequence, the front on the Koninginneweg is the most important façade: it is The Sovereign’s visiting card.

Wetropolis images in Bangkok, Thailand by S+PBA

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Article source: S+PBA

A Post-Diluvian Future

While most of the world follows the standard from dust to dust, ashes to ashes cycle, Bangkok prefers something wetter: from water to water. Almost 300 years after rising from the marshy banks of the Chao Phraya, it appears Bangkok will return to its watery origins. A recent UN study estimates that much of the metropolitan area will need to be abandoned by the middle of the century.
