The civic scale of Fire Station 30 marks the transition between the commercial activity of Rainier Avenue and the residential Mt. Baker neighborhood. The scale and material presence of the two‐story building make it an anchor along historic Mt. Baker Boulevard. The highly transparent street façade allows passers‐by to view activity within. At night, the illuminated building becomes a beacon of the Seattle Fire Department’s presence within and commitment to its community.

At the early stages of the project, weekly on-line model review meetings were conducted between the owner, engineer, equipment suppliers, McCarthy and other key site contractors. During construction, specific on-line BIM conferences allowed the team to review any installation conflicts or issues and provide quick resolutions.

Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse in Manhattan, New York by Dean/Wolf Architects

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Article source: Dean/Wolf Architects

The Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse is an addition and renovation of a Tribeca loft building.  The existing structure, a traditional New York warehouse covers the entire lot, consuming the exterior space traditional in domestic construction.  Inverting the conventional townhouse organization recovers this coveted ground.  Dissipating energy into the dark center of this converted warehouse, three double story voids animate the missing “garden” of the townhouse providing light, air, and visual contemplation.  Admitting light and townhouse “garden” uses, these new spaces provide the structure for domestic life.  Exterior court, reading court, and playroom are suspended into the void.  Conceived as new construction built upside down into an existing building, they dissipate a radiant energy into the host.

The Lighthouse 65 in Hill Head, UK by AR Design Studio

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Article source: AR Design Studio

“The Lighthouse” is a beachfront property on the south coast of England. It is a super insulated, luxury 3 bedroom house sitting in a beautiful water side location enjoying stunning views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

The site is enclosed between two neighboring buildings and a 7m high embankment to the north; of which pavement and street access sits at the top. This access, to the roof level of the property, and the one-directional view over the beach, English Channel and Isle of Wight to the south, has led to an interesting design which takes inspiration from traditional beach pavilions such as the De La Warr in Bexhill a little further along the coast.
