The Wilderness in Suffolk, England by Paul+O Architects

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Article source: Paul+O Architects

The Wilderness is a 750 sq m new-build country house in the Suffolk countryside designed by London-based Paul+O Architects.

The design draws on a European architectural language and is one of the few built examples of houses granted planning permission under PPG7 clause 3.21, a planning policy guidance note passed by MP John Gummer in 1997 in the UK to permit planning consent for isolated new houses in the countryside if they “are truly outstanding in terms of Architecture and landscape design and would significantly enhance its immediate setting and wider surroundings”.

Tile and Concrete in Parma, Italy by Francesco Di Gregorio & Karin Matz

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Article source: Francesco Di Gregorio & Karin Matz

Located in Lasagnana, on a tiny street in the middle of Val Parma, the ground level of a former stable has been converted into an apartment / studio for an young couple . Dimensions and shapes come from the position of existing elements: windows, walls and columns. The strongest element of the stable was for us the “whole space”. A bathroom is the only volume added, completely covered in white 10×10 cm tiles that bring light and uniformity. It is a freestanding structure where space has been turned inside out. Inside the functions needed, outside the circulation.

Berkeley Live/Work Residence in Toronto, Canada by PLANT Architect Inc.

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Article source: PLANT Architect Inc.

PLANT’s work on this existing live/work structure in downtown Toronto involved a 2,000 square-foot interior renovation and a new cladding concept for the exterior facades. This concept creates a more inviting entrance that serves to distinguish the office entrance from the residential entrance. Using a new palette of materials, the light-coloured building skin, metal window accents, and cedar cladding lighten the overall massing of the building’s upper portion. In contrast, warmer, tactile materials were used at the entry points off the street.

The Yardmaster’s Building in Melbourne, Australia by McBride Charles Ryan architecture+interior design

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Article source: McBride Charles Ryan architecture+interior design

Cross Rail Yard. Typically, a service building inaccessible to the public like this would be treated in a pragmatic and unremarkable way. In contrast, the Yardmasters Building confidently presents itself as a ‘public’ entity. Viewed in the round, it offers itself back to the city as an exquisite, mysterious box: a jewel in the junkheap. The project involved extensive consultation with representatives of the diverse users, their respective union representatives, and management and associated authorities.

Given the fact that the client was a newly arrived surgeon in Thessaloniki (Greece), we were handed the task of creating a memorable office space, providing an experience as distant as possible from the usual image one associates with a visit to a doctor’s studio.

Maximiliano Restaurant in Los Angeles by FreelandBuck (designed using Rhino and Grasshopper)

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Article source: FreelandBuck

Maximiliano is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria for chef Andre Guerrero that opened in October 2011 in Los Angeles.  The 2,200 sf tenant improvement is atmospherically distinct; a unique triangular dining area infused with color and evocative of the rich and refined menu. A large mural on the large south wall creates a strong graphic and spatial identity, evoking the rhythmic yet varied shapes of Guerrero’s handmade pastas. The rhythm of embossed white stripes shifts from evenly parallel at the ceiling to randomly wavy at the seats, giving a gravitational weight to the wall and infusing the space with vibrant color and pattern. Descending over a door to the patio is a deep porous soffit that undulates over the bar, filtering natural and artificial light and housing the restaurants wine collection.  The brightly painted slats animate the space with local and varied color intensities creating 3d optical effects as the viewer moves that recall the visual instability of 1970’s Op Art.

Article source: Asymptote Architecture

The opening of the iconic Yas Hotel, with interiors by Jestico + Whiles and architecture by New York City based Asymptote Architecture’s Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture coincided with the inaugural Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 1 2009. Jestico + Whiles was appointed by Aldar Hotels and Hospitality as interior designers of the luxury Yas Hotel which occupies a prime position; spanning the most exciting corner of the new Yas Marina F1 Grand Prix circuit, on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The architectural form is unique in that the circuit could be said to run through the hotel, and one of the twin elliptical wings sits in the Marina itself.
