Villa Saitan in Kyoto, Japan by Eastern design office

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Eastern design office

The site is in Nishioji-hachijo, Kyoto. From the main street we enter into a covert place along an alley of 4 meters in width. This construction is a collective housing consisting of 11 units.  The impersonality of segmental housing complex is completely concealed in this architecture.  Instead it is built to be seen as one big house. The architecture is covered with a wall in which holes are cut. The shape of the holes resembles a trunk, leaves, a root and bulbs. It also can be seen as clouds floating over the trees. Concrete shape which is based on nature turns into a hollow cave, light, and sunbeams filtered through trees.

Article source: Mecanoo architecten

The district of Sterrenburg is located on the south side of Dordrecht and was largely built during the 1960s and 1970s. It is a sizable district with 21,000 residents and a generous share of parks, gardens and other green areas; it is also very close to the historical natural conservancy areas on the ‘Island’ of Dordrecht. The new building for KIEM will be built on the northern edge of the area on the De Sitterstraat. The school’s joint name covers five separate branches of education, care and medical science. De Vlij is a ‘Mytyl’ school for children with a physical disability or multiple disabilities, the Blije Gaarde, a school for children with serious learning issues and the Dordtse Buitenschool for children with long-term illnesses.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Jost Architects

The Elwood House is a new residential dwelling with a separate garage and studio to the rear. The client’s brief was for a modern family home that was interesting and exciting but not to the detriment of the comfort to the occupants and within a sensible budget. “The client wanted a house that was clean, distinctive and enjoyable to use without feeling like they were an object in their own home because it was of a contemporary design” says the architect, Patrick Jost.

Butcher’s Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia by SADAR + VUGA

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: SADAR + VUGA

The new Butcher’s bridge concludes the arrangement of the Jože Plecnik’s covered market from the mid-1930s. It connects the market area on the Adamic-Lunder embankment with the new market area on the regulated Petkovšek embankment.

The proposal envisages a ‘house-bridge’ with three horizontal platforms. The lower, the upper and the canopy platforms determine two levels of covered space above the river. The dimensions of the platforms, 39×19 m, enable a continuation of both the market and the public event area on the lower and upper levels of the bridge. All three platforms are equipped with slender bell-shaped columns that alternatingly widen either downwards or upwards, tied to a homogeneous spatial structure. The columns are placed onto the platforms in two longitudinal rows, which leave open a central space on each level. The columns are set at a distance from all edges of the platforms so that the space between the fence of the platforms and the columns offers room for a three-metre passageway.

OCT Design Museum in Shenzhen, China by Studio Pei-Zhu

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Studio Pei-Zhu

The inspiration for the project comes from both the location being close to the bay and from the needs of the program, a surreal space for design exhibitions. The Oct design museum focuses mainly on fashion shows, product design, and conceptual automotive shows. The goal was to create a space that is surreal to the subject matter but also transcendental in surrounding and feeling. The design of the interior relies on a continuous white curving surface that casts no shadows and has no depth.

Wijkeroogpark in Velsen, The Netherlands by Bureau B+B Urbanism and Landscape Architecture

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Article source: Bureau B+B Urbanism and Landscape Architecture

De Scheybeek rises in the inner dunes near Heemskerk. The lower reaches of the stream, made visible in the park, culminates in the Noordzeelanaal. The natural level of the brook lies about 30 cm. above ground level, approximately one metre above the level of the ditches in the surrounding polder. This artificial situation offers opportunities for nature and recreation, as well as being the starting point for the park design. The brook has been staged together with the new pedestrian and bicycle paths in the extended spaces in the park. A game of meeting and disappearing takes place between the visitor and the stream.

Condominium Trnovski Pristan in Ljubljana, Slovenia by SADAR + VUGA

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Article source: SADAR + VUGA

Condominium is a two-floor apartment building with fifteen individualized apartments, common entrance lobby, interior winter garden and exterior summer atrium.

Its basic volume is agitated, partitioned and non-monolithic, which allows for optimal illumination of all apartments and a connection of interior area with the exterior through greater greened terraces, consoled balconies and winter gardens. The partitioning of the basic volume continues to the irregular rhythm of the balconies volume. The balconies extend far away from the building, towards the circumferential garden. The partitioning reaches its peak by the composition of façade surfaces made of pixels of multi-coloured ceramic tiles, and pre-dimensioned black metal frames, which link Blown-up Windows and balconies of orange wood.
