Tosetto, Weigmann and Associates in Turin, Italy by MARC

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Article source: MARC

MARC is commissioned to transform an elegant mansion from the beginning of the 20th century into an efficient contemporary office building. To do that it needs to perform radical and pragmatic interventions, optimizing the use of space. At the same time, it is necessary to respect the existing rooms and preserve their charm, but without being intimidated by their cold classicism. The project looks for discretion and neutrality while inserting all the many necessary new elements. Like the new staircase in perforated metal -the trigger of the typological change- that connects seven different levels illuminating them with a big skylight.

Vertical Patio in Seattle, Washington by PIQUE llc

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Article source: PIQUE llc

This back yard patio situated on a small urban lot in Seattle provided an opportunity to explore how a very simple and contained architecture can animate a space and continually surprise and engage its owners.

The challenge was the client’s interest in adding a large amount of program (grill patio, hot tub, changing room, dining table, bar, stool, reading area, and security gates) while maintaining as much open area as possible.  The solution began with a calculation of the allowable building area in the back yard which was then transferred directly into two vertical planes.  Through a series of hinges and pivots, the individual bits of program are housed in these two vertical walls. Sun/shadow studies derived where the specific locations for the various programs would be within the composition of the wall.

Heatherlands Pool House in Devon, UK by Satellite Architects (designed with Vectorworks)

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Article source: Satellite Architects

Heatherlands is a substantial addition to an existing house, built in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Dorset Devon border. It responds carefully to the folding of the landscape and roof pitches of the existing house, The folds create splits which highlight views, both concealing and opening to them. A new living room forms a transition point between the old and the new, collecting reflected views and light. Situated to the West of the existing house, the structure takes the stance of a traditional outbuilding, acting as a paddock boundary whilst protecting the gardens. The addition defines a new approach to the building, entrance court and outdoor terrace to the South. Adopting a number of sustainable strategies the building includes passive ventilation, sustainable materials and highly insulated construction. The existing building is wrapped in shingle, which will weather together with the new larch rain screens, covering the addition.

The Palestinian Museum in West Bank, Palestine by Henning Larsen Architects

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Article source: Henning Larsen Architects

The West Bank is characterised by the hilly landscape defining the skyline. Henning Larsen Architects’ proposal is a formation of smaller building units rising like a small clustered city from the hill side with individual tilted roofs forming the skyline. The museum will be built in phases and the smaller unit approach allows the museum to grow over time as the program matures.
