Hanok Garden in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea by Y Design Office

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Article source: Y Design Office

Hanok Garden, a landscape project in South Korea byY Design Office, strips one of the older Korean traditional courtyard houses into its barebones with a small deck for resting. The old house is simply turned into a public garden. More is taken away than what gets added. The project asks and challenges the very basic questions about a person, a house, a city and a tree.

Pueblo House in Oelde, Germany by Matthias Schmalohr

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Article source: Matthias Schmalohr

The virtually ‚shocking‘ modern extension with its red fair-faced concrete and the flat roof opens the normality of living under a saddle-roof. The small estate house from the fifties, the basis of the extension, is not being copied or falsified by using the technical advances of the 21st century, but experiences an independent, modern continuation. Thus inside, at close range to each other, very different worlds of experiences emerge: the significance of great apertures, wide views, multistorey openness in contrast to the fragmentation and narrowness of the past. What makes the ensemble, including a new carport, so fascinating, is the contrast and the interplay of all these influences. Different dates of origin lead, consequently from an architectural point of view, to different results.

Orange Grove in West Hollywood, California by BROOKS + SCARPA

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Article source: BROOKS + SCARPA

Located in a neighborhood characterized by traditional bungalow style single-family residences, Orange Grove is a new landmark for the City of West Hollywood.  The building is sensitively designed and compatible with the neighborhood, but differs in material palette and scale from its neighbors. Referencing architectural conventions of modernism rather than the pitched roof forms of traditional domesticity, the project presents a characteristic that is consistent with the eclectic and often unconventional demographic of West Hollywood.  Distinct from neighboring structures, the building creates a strong relationship to the street by virtue of its large amount of highly usable balcony area in the front façade.

Article source: Kengo Kuma & Associates

This pavilion is located at the foot of Laojunshan mountain in Xinjin, to usher in the people to the holy place of Taoism, while the building itself shows the essence of Taoism through its space and exhibitions.

The tile used for façade is made of local material and worked on in a traditional method of this region, to pay tribute to Taoism that emphasizes on nature and balance. Tile is hung and floated in the air by wire to be released from its weight (and gain lightness). Clad in breathing façade of particles, the architecture is merged into its surrounding nature.

Public Art Installations by Numen/For Use

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Article source: Numen/For Use

The work was specially commissioned by Melbourne’s main civic centre and cultural district Federation Square as a part of their Creative Program focussing on experimental large-scale public art and its social and communal relevance. The full 16 meters stretch of the Fed Square’s Western Terrace is the greatest span traversed by a Tape Installation thus far. The structure had to be constructed with the help of special platforms as it projects from the external walls of the Fed Square’s SBS building at the height of 6 meters above ground. Its more slender and tenuous, distinctly willowy form is dictated by the specifics of the bridged span and setting. Tape Melbourne is the first Tape Installation to be executed outside Europe and below the equator.

Article source: Ramón Fernández-Alonso y Asociados

The project, called administratively “Rehabilitation of the Old School Square Minor of Archidona ” located between the Plaza Ochavada and the street San José combines two distinct types of intervention, consisting on one hand, in acting on the heritage building that gives face to the square consisting primarily of a conceptual re-definition of its functioning and enhancer of its structural features and, at the same time, the approach of a new building facing the street frontage of the Street San Jose with its own capacity and specificity.

Oresen House in Sapporo, Japan by Akasaka Shinichiro Atelier (designed using Vectorworks)

Design Philosophy

Rather than imposing our own designs unilaterally, we think of clients as equal partners in the process of discussing requests and problems, which are then resolved through design and planning. While the end product of this process is a physical structure, we think of our fundamental role as designing human-to-human and human-to-environment relationships.

Our goal is to create architecture whose meaning and purpose is derived through ongoing communication with clients.

Espai Ridaura in Girona, Spain by Capella Garcia Arquitectura (designed using ArchiCAD)

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Article source: Capella Garcia Arquitectura

This is a multipurpose facility in Santa Cristina d’Aro, Girona, in the district of Baix Empordà. Santa Cristina d’Aro is situated close to the coast, in the upper reach of the Vall d’Aro, and the river Ridaura flows through it close to the town centre. The municipality is growing as a result of the large amount of tourist activity during the summer months, which means that it already possesses considerable leisure and cultural facilities. Nonetheless, the facilities in Santa Cristina were very basic and quite a few years old, as well as being at some distance from the town centre. So much so that the concerts of the Santa Cristina International Chamber Music Festival took place in the parish church.

Sport Complex and Swimming Center in La Florida, Spain by NAOS Architecture

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Article source: NAOS Architecture

The location of the Sport Complex and Swimming Center in La Florida, Vigo, was a challenge because it was in a empty space of a built block, with a very high slope. So, the superior level stayed and the building was constructed below this level and it develops the functional program semi-buried. Therefore, on top of the building, was projected a public square and the slope of the terrain.
