Loft Lloydkwartier by Rotterdam, The Netherlands by 123DV Modern Villas

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Article source: 123DV Modern Villas

In a former warehouse in the harbour of Rotterdam a loft is realised. The characteristic of the dwelling is its spaciousness, which exists because of a surplus of space. To maintain this quality, the program of the dwelling is placed into the space in two separate elements. The two elements both have their own materiality and are placed in the space on their own way.

Family House In Kunratice, Czech Republic by Aulík Fišer Architekti

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Article source: Aulík Fišer Architekti

This plot‘s main value that influenced the concept of this two-storied house with a cellar below a part of it is its direct link to Kunratický les (forest). The main living quarters, the viewing centreline passing through the entire ground floor and the two-storied vertical space are opened towards the forest. The house was designed as a relatively small one respecting the overall suitability, for one part of glazing transforms into a roof here. Yet it is sufficient enough to see the selected strip of the garden, forest and sky as a whole, in one vertical format.

Canada Post Corporation in Ontario, Canada by Kingsland + Architects (designed with ArchiCAD)

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Article source: Kingsland + Architects

We were given the task to design a single storey building, the ubiquitous factory / warehouse building with front office. A dissection of the program provided us with a simple theme. By nature of its program, the building consists of two independent spaces. The heart and soul of the building is the letter carriers sortation facility, a function likely defined as ‘blue collar’ and not far from functioning and appearing just like that of a “factory”.

House on Fire Island in New York by Studio Twenty Seven Architecture (designed with Rhino, AutoCAD, and Photoshop)

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Article source: Studio 27 Architecture

This is a summer beach house in the resort community of the Pines on Fire Island New York. The typology of the homes in the Pines is recognizable to anyone who has visited an East Coast Shoreline resort town. It is a builderdriven typology reflecting the pragmatism of the inhabitants of these coastal communities. Almost always the “good sense” pragmatism that allows these homes to be built affordably overtakes the inherent liveliness and natural spirit of the place and creates structures that are a bit dull. This project inserts some of the “spirit of the shore” into this “Yankee thriftiness” residential typology. Common detail and material remain, but the volume of the house is expressed as a skin, rather than as a box-like container. The skin keeps the heat in. Over time, the skin of woven cedar boards will assume the same patina as neighboring houses. Large windows are introduced to reveal a luxurious light interior.

Oleanderweg in Halle-Neustadt, Germany by Stefan Forster Achitekten (designed using ArchiCAD)

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Article source: Stefan Forster Achitekten

This conversion of existing prefabricated building in Halle-Neustadt resulted from the city reconstruction for the International Architectural Exhibition (IBA) in 2010. Originally, 2 or 3 apartments per floor were arranged around 11 staircases.  By reducing the staircases to 6 and removing the associated corridors.  It has allowed for the extension and rearrangment of the apartments. Outdoor spaces have been formed by removing alternating sections of the 3rd and 4th floorplates, creating large outdoor terrace spaces.  On the floors below, wide, continious balconies provide quality outside spaces for the flats.

New Headquarters and Production Complex for Pratic in Udine, Italy by GEZA Studio

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Article source: GEZA Studio

The inauguration for the new headquarters and production complex of Pratic, a company owned by the Orioli brothers and specialized in the design and manufacture of curtain systems, has recently taken place in Fagagna a town located in the province of Udine, in Northern Italy. The complex placed adjacent to the provincial highway that leads from Udine to Spilimbergo, was designed and built by GEZA (architects Stefano Gri and Piero Zucchi). The intervention is composed principally of: a main volume, a parallelepiped with a surface of approximately 10,000 m2 that houses the main productive core; a second volume of about 1000 m2 placed adjacent to the first but rotated 15 degrees in order to align with the highway is dedicated to the offices; a parking lot for 100 cars; a loading dock and service area of approximately 2,700 m2; a garden space of about 33,000 m2. In addition spaces dedicated to communication, showrooms, break rooms and open communal and private areas are housed in the buildings in order to accommodate the daily activities of the workers. The complex, anchored in the industrial zone of the town, is also intimately tied to the surrounding agricultural landscape through different aspects of its design; thus ultimately forming part of the mountain scape characteristic of the region.

E. Pearce Revisited in New York by workshopapd

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Article source: workshopapd

Paying homage to the Baroque staircase attributed to 17th century English master Edmund Pearce (on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art), workshop/apd fashioned a contemporary update for a modern Tribeca loft. Where Pearce incorporated oak leaves and pine cones, we digitized interlaced tree branches to create an element of modern-day beauty and craft in water-jet cut steel, bringing fancifulness and ornamentation back to architecture. Like its predecessor, the dramatic scroll – now in perforated steel – weaves the two floors together in a unique way.
