Article source: STUDIO UP

Shenzhen and Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale takes place since 2005, with ‘urbanisation’ as a set long-term theme. This year, the chosen chief curator is Terence Riley, internationally reckognized architect and curator. Among his significant projects are leading the renovation and expansion of Museum of Modern Art (New York) and The Miami Art Museum. In his curatorial statement for the 2011 Bienale, Terence Riley conceived a rather simple, axiomatic but powerful theme: Architecture creates cities – Cities create architecture.

borg + nms deutsch-wagram in Deutsch-wagram, Austria by franz zt gmbh

One (school) for all

Central and still removed from the heavy traffic of the federal highway one can find the most important public institutions of Deutsch-Wagram lined up along a footpath: city administration, kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. In order to enable school education up to university entrance qualification, the municipal council decided the erection of an upper secondary school with focus on natural sciences and mathematics (“Realgymnasium”). At the same time, the existing secondary school (“Hauptschule”) needed to be expanded. A common institution for both types of school promised to yield valuable synergies. Spatial proximity to the other educational institutions seemed logical, but the available property with park and landscape pond was a valuable area used by kindergarten and elementary school during recess. Moreover, it was not without problems with regard to structural engineering for a large-volume building task.

Home for Life in Lystrup, Denmark by AART Architects (designed using AutoCAD and Revit)

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Article source: AART Architects

Home for Life is located in Lystrup outside Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, and leads the way to the next generation of climate-neutral buildings. It is designed as the world’s first Active House and is a result of a research and design development aimed at ensuring a necessary foothold in architecture in an anticipated low-carbon future. The 200m2 single family house is a CO2-neutral demonstration project, which systematically uses the energy from the sun. 7m2 solar collectors, 50m2 solar cells and a solar heat pump contribute to reduce the demand for energy, while strategically placed solar-cell operated roof windows offer a balanced amount of daylight to the bedrooms and the kitchen-dining room area. Furthermore, all roof windows have dynamic, solar-cell operated blinds on the inside and awnings on the outside.

Elementary school Veli Vrh in Pula, Croatia by Randic Turato architects

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Article source: Randic Turato architects

Veli Vrh is a suburb in Pula with low density housing dominated by the school on top of the hill. In February 2008 the school caught on fire and burned down, creating an unusual void bordered with the pine trees in the middle of a typical suburban sprawl. This specific condition of emptiness was the basis for the design concept.

Article source: Virai Arquitectos

The project extends and completes an existing school building in Miranda de Ebro. The school is located in the outskirts of the city of Burgos, adopting the L-form inside a squared plot. The new proposal extends the continuity of the existing form. The overall project is therefore understood as a unity created in two parts. Continuity, versatility and communication are the key words of the proposal.
