Amstel Bridge in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Article source: Thiago Augustus Prenholato Alves, Rodolfo Parolin Hardy, Rafael Santos Ferraz and Gilberto Baroni Junior.

The design comes from an analysis of the duality between complexity and simplicity, how a plain idea can develop onto a project that meets the needs of a pre-established program and interacts with the surrounding area. A challenge that is not to create the longest span or the most acrobatic structure but to connect both two points of the city and the inhabitant to the city. How to create a distinct and recognizable bridge design that’ll be integrated and interactive? An infrastructure optimized for public life. The design of the bridge brings the waves in the water surface to the level of the buildings around, integrating this unusual form to the city landscape. The contrast invites the pedestrian to discover new routes and challenges him along the path curves to see new perspectives, reopening his eyes to the beauty of Amsterdam.

23 Social Housing In Bethune, France By Fres Architectes

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Article source: Fres Architectes

The project is surrounded by heterogeneous elements dating back from the 70’s, and outside of road network. The joining piece for all these elements is the public space. The building is implanted along the two roads, and has four floors, plus two extra on the angle of the two boulevards. There is a gap on the first floor that gives a certain rythm to the facade and allows a large collective terrace. The facades have a unique material: black bricks. The entrance hall is conceived as a large colored window over public space, creating a strong contrast between its transparency and the opacity of black bricks.

The main requirement of the hosts was the transformation of the old house into a modern comfortable home for a large family. The house has undergone a complete renovation with the result that there is another level of light metal structures that dictated his stylistic direction. The house is a composition of cubic volumes and metallic bonds. As a result, there were four spacious bedrooms, two on the ground floor and two on the second (three of which has its own balcony, and the fourth in the total output with cabinet terrace), most of the space of the first floor is occupied by the main rooms – a living room combined with a kitchen and dining area with views the pool on the ground floor entrance rooms and rest rooms in the center of the house through the three levels is odnomarshevaya staircase with soaring steps set out in the supporting wall.

The House has 3 double bedrooms with a studio. The Main Master bedroom has an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. House includes 3 individual living areas, and a triple garage.  The two bathrooms and a separate visitor toilet like the ensuite, have possible disabled access. The layout allows for separation between the formal living and dining area and separate family living and kitchen area. The third lounge is close to the visitor’s bedrooms, giving opportunity for easy living, for the extended family. All rooms have direct access outside in same level with possibility to use the glorious outdoor space from anywhere.  Around house are extensive decking, garden with surrounding native bush and few small lakes – pond areas.

Refurbishment of the West Tower in Huesca, Spain by ACXT

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

Article source: ACXT

The project deals with the Refurbishment of the West Tower of the Huesca City Hall in order to turn it into City Archives.
Due to its position and volume, the Archives round off the set of buildings that make up the Huesca City Hall which gives the impression of being an unfinished construction, for the east and west walls are party walls and it seems as if in the past, they might have had an adjoining construction:

  • The west wall is a mud wall with rows of solid brick, with irregular openings, some of which are bricked up.
  • The east wall is blind except for an opening on the attic floor

Pendrous New Residence in Wellington, New Zealand by Studio MWA – Studio Mikulcic Worldwide Architecture

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Article source: Studio MWA – studio Mikulcic Worldwide Architecture

The first site visit and site analysis were crucial for this design. Good ”separation” for each functional areas in the house as well as capturing fantastic views on one side towards Wellington – city and harbour and on another side towards Petone shore, Eastbourne and Lower Hutt and further over the  valley, with simple clean lines and forms were my guide which determinate this design.

Druk White Lotus School in Indus Valley, India by Arup Associates

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Article source: Arup Associates

The Druk White Lotus School is located in the Indus Valley, Northern India. An environment of extremes, and lying at 3,500m above sea level, this is a high-altitude desert landscape where temperatures fall to -30 degrees Celcius in winter; for about five months of each year the region is cut off from the rest of India by snow.
The challenge was to create a centre of local culture, education and communication that integrates the region of Ladakh’s unique cultural and architectural heritage with appropriate opportunities to be found in contemporary design.

House of ISM in Chiba, Japan by International Royal Architecture (I.R.A)

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Article source: International Royal Architecture (I.R.A)

It is the area developed on a large scale as resort property of a bubble period near by from the sea. Most of other sites are untouched and the owner of land and right relocation of a site boundary or a road are not certain. This cottage for a client who likes fishing stands to a site like a vast weeds place.

Neither the sea nor a mountain nor beautiful green can necessarily be seen from here. The impressive house that has the form of the white arrow was built to the site without an important context.

Article source: Acme Architecture

Founded in 1972, the Isla Vista Food Cooperative is the only natural and organic foods consumer cooperative in Santa Barbara County. Though a mainstay in the community, the Co-op was often ignored by pedestrians, not realizing what lay behind its inconspicuous storefront.
