The Sant Francesc convent, located in the small Catalan town of Santpedor, was built in the early 18th century by Franciscan priests. In 1835 the convent was sacked. Thereafter began the process of progressive deterioration of the building that ended with its demolition in 2000. Only the church remained standing, but in a completely ruinous state.

Livraria Da Vila in São Paulo, Brazil by Isay Weinfeld

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Article source: Isay Weinfeld

The Livraria da Vila is the result of the refurbishment of a two-story house, built on a very narrow plot in São Paulo.

From start, it was clear an open plan was needed, as to better arrange products and circulation. For that reason, significant structural alterations were performed to the existing building, such as the incorporation of metal parts that would make it possible to displace the pillars to the outer sections of the building, and reinforce its foundations.

Nettleton 198 in Cape Town, South Africa by SAOTA

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Article source: SAOTA

The clients, a British couple living in Cape Town, requested a six-bedroom, seven-level home that makes the most of the site, the views and the mountain. The lower levels of the existing structure were totally remodelled while the upper level was demolished to allow for two new levels.

“Inspiration was drawn from the mountain and dark colours were used on the facade, allowing the building to visually recede into the mountain instead of being an obtrusive construction,” says Greg Truen, Project Partner. The site enjoys spectacular views, both of the sea and Lions Head and these views and the impact of the sun were key informants contributing to the overall design.

After seven years of planning and fundraising in the midst of a national recession, construction of the North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA NC) thoroughly sustainable Center for Architecture & Design was completed this summer in Raleigh.

Located on an oddly shaped, previously unused lot in downtown Raleigh near the State Capitol and Government Complex, the new Center is the first AIA headquarters facility to be built from the ground up expressly for this purpose, and AIANC hopes it will serve as a flagship for modern, sustainable urban design in North Carolina’s capital city.

A 20-megawatt power plant near Seville, Spain, set the record as the largest commercial solar power tower in the world when it was inaugurated by the King and Queen of Spain in September 2009. Owned by Abengoa Solar, a leader in solar technology, the PS20 concentrating solar power (CSP) plant is twice the size of its predecessor (PS10), and just one of four solar plants operating on the Solucar Platform in Sanlucar la Mayor, Sevilla. Another three solar plants are under construction.
