LUX – Landscape design in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg by AllesWirdGut Architektur ZT GmbH

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Article source: AllesWirdGut Architektur ZT GmbH

Between forward-facing high-rise buildings and blast furnaces of the past the new Steelyard square forms the center of Belval Ouest, a city development project which is currently constructed in Luxembourg on the grounds of a former steel mill. The disused industrial site´s atmosphere was characterized by wideness and roughness as well as pioneer plants such as mosses and birch. The former situation is necessarily literally covered by the new use and new design. Our major goal was it to let the now hidden qualities shine through the redesign.

A House in Pamplona, Spain by Vaillo & Irigaray + Beguiristain

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Article source: Vaillo & Irigaray + Beguiristain

The renovation of this home suggests a consideration on the consequences to be derived from the implementation of a new -almost palatial- scale.

A strategy has been planned: to shape a sole plan by means of large board pavement – 15m length x 30cm width.

This concept is emphasized by the employment of a theatrical iconography: curtains covering the whole space, disfiguring backgrounds, blurring space continuity and generating some thrilling chambers.

Cycling Center in Gothenburg, Sweden by Weareyou

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Article source: Weareyou

“Here’s our vision of what a cycling center in the city of Gothenburg could be.

The group called cyclists is a scattered bunch of people ranging from commuters to exercisers and committed athletes. They are also divided by the choice of bike. Commuters rarely hang out with the people getting dirty in the woods and BMX riders have probably never had the chance to ask why roadies shave their legs. This calls for a change and that’s where this proposal took its starting point. Cyclists need an arena just like any other sport: soccer, ice hockey etc. where the stadium acts as the natural meeting point, ambassador of the sport and its practitioners. We also believe that sports are closely connected to everyday behavior and life style.

Stairway Cinema in Auckland, New Zealand by Oh.No.Sumo

Article source: Oh.No.Sumo

Stairway Cinema is the third installation by OH.NO.SUMO.

Our ongoing goal is to experiment with architecture and the way it can engage with the public in unique and exciting ways. This project takes inspiration from the site and its inhabitants. The site is the busy pedestrian intersection of two inner city streets in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located between two universities and is a place of ‘unconsidered waiting’. Bus stops and laundromats create a dispersed hard-scape that results in numerous instances of poor quality waiting, while simultaneously failing to provide quality space for social interaction. Members of the public retreat individually into the media offered on their mobile phones. This in turn results in greater separation and dislocation from an existing community that is waiting to be activated. A community must be linked not only virtually but also physically.

Rosa F. Keller Library & Community Center in New Orleans, Louisiana by Eskew+Dumez+Ripple

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Article source: Eskew+Dumez+Ripple

This New Orleans neighborhood library is comprised of two buildings joined together with the intention that they function as a whole. One building is a historically significant bungalow built as a residence in 1917, sited prominently on the corner of South Broad Street and Napoleon Avenue. The other building, built in 1993 specifically to function as a library, was home to the main reading room and stock areas. Both buildings were severely flooded by levee breaks attributed to Hurricane Katrina. The bungalow was salvaged and raised for future flood prevention, but the modern addition was deemed necessary for replacement by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).

The Soweto Theatre in Gauteng, South Africa by Afritects

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Article source: Afritects

The brief for the Soweto theatre was to create a public performing arts centre that the community of Soweto, South Africa would feel invited to use, enjoy and take ownership of. The concept of the building has evolved the existing typical theatre typology; the monolithic, impenetrable, secretive-mass with one- almost reluctant- public-gesture (the front door) has now become an open, legible and inviting space. All of the inner workings of the theatre are expressed outwards, beguiling and enticing its community in.

Abitare il sottotetto in Milan, Italy by Studio Arcadia Ego

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Article source: Studio Arcadia Ego

The design solution for the apartment started from the need to modify the original project that included the execution of a partition wall in front of the entrance; this wall delimited the area deputed to food preparation closed by sliding glass doors and furniture provided with angular. This solution, however, prevented a rational distribution of the residence, having an area of 30 square meters, could contain only a small table and a sofa. The project, planned to greatly reduce the wall of the kitchen until it becomes a shoulder retaining wall system of open living space which becomes a distinctive design element.

Teacher Education School by Idom

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Article source: Idom

Following the instructions given by the UPV and due to its strategic location within the city, the building is intended to become an architectonic reference for its appearance. This issue has been addressed, as will later on be explained, by means of a modern and high quality design, in line with the institution it represents. For that purpose, apart from a well taken care of volumetric composition that carefully works around the volume restrictions imposed by the site development plan, the logo designed by Eduardo Chillida has been included in the planned double glass façade.
