S & T’s new office fit out is all about our core philosophy, “Creating Inspirational Environments”.  The internal space has been designed specifically to promote well being and to encourage team interaction. To achieve this, the space is fresh, comfortable, and stimulating; with an uplifting, colour scheme and engaging textures.

  • Architects: Stephenson&Turner
  • Project Name: Stephenson&Turner Wellington Design Studio Fit Out
  • Location: Wellington, New Zealand
  • Client: Stephenson&Turner
  • Project Year: 2011
  • Project Area: 500m²
  • Photographs: Paul McCredie & Stephenson&Turner
  • Software used: Revit Architecture & MEP, IES VE for the building thermal performance simulation, Dialux for the lighting simulation

Set in the top floor of a 110-year-old building, the timber floors, brick walls and open trusses offered huge potential to create an open-plan office with a finished space that contrasts the relationship between old and new.  The usual screens which separate individuals and disciplines came down and all are now part of one team. Informal meeting spaces are also scattered throughout the studio to encourage communication.

The fitout was also created to showcase the firm’s commitment to sustainable architecture and building services engineering.  It features sustainably-harvested and reused timber, daylight addressable lighting, natural ventilation, heat-pump and radiant heating as well as a green wall and strict use of low VOC paints and adhesives.  A particular focus on construction waste minimisation resulted in 90% of waste materials being recycled or reused.

The light, open-plan environment also facilitates wellbeing and productivity.  New skylights in the roof maximise access to daylight and natural ventilation. An intelligent lighting system was installed to ensure that any shortfall in daylight could be supplemented with artificial lighting.

The fitout was awarded a 6 Star Green Star Interiors rating, the highest level attainable, by the New Zealand Green Building Council.

S&T’s clients now enter directly into the creative environment of our studio and can be actively involved in the design process with our teams.

“Creating a 6 Star working environment for our own people demonstrates the standard we actively pursue in all our design projects. Ensuring the built environment has sustainability at its core is our contribution to future generations who live, work and play in our buildings. We also set out to prove that 6-Stars can be achieved on a restricted project budget and is attainable with the right design approach.”
