Poetry Foundation in Chicago, Illinois by John Ronan Architects

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Article source: John Ronan Architects

The Poetry Foundation is comprised of a building in dialogue with a garden created through erosion of an implied volume as described by the L-shaped property boundary. The garden interlocks with the building and is conceived as another “room,” part of the building’s slowly-unfolding spatial sequence revealed space by space, not unlike a poem is revealed line by line.

Chão das Giestas House in Guarda, Portugal by AVA Architects

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Article source: AVA Architects

The house evolves having the planimetry of the city (Guarda-Portugal) as a background. The place, in peripheral context, is profoundly different from the center because of the recently urbanization, the natural territory was depersonalized by the topographic changes caused by that. The existing public space is builded without an organisation that matches the topography of the place, forcing an artificial and uncharacterized lotting, Nowadays, there are different morphologies and typologies of construction.

The Standard in Manhattan, New York City by Ennead Architects

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Article source: Ennead Architects

Located in Manhattan’s Hudson riverfront Meatpacking District, the hotel responds to its context through contrast: sculptural piers, whose forms clearly separate the building from the orthogonal street grid, raise the building fifty-seven feet off the street, and allow the horizontally-scaled industrial landscape to pass beneath it and natural light to penetrate to the street.

DC Boogie-Woogie in Washington, D.C. by Suzane Reatig Architecture

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Article source: Suzane Reatig Architecture

The tight site, located across from the Mt. Vernon Square metro, originally housed six apartments for the elderly. The not-for-profit client wanted to replace the dilapidated building with a new three-story apartment building with an elevator. Before construction began, the owner found suitable replacement housing for the elderly tenants, and decided to offer the units to all. The change in program was an opportunity for the addition of mezzanines to the upper three units.

Skrybicus in Kiev, Ukraine by Makhno design

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Article source: Makhno design

Game without rules

The most rewarding for a designer is – to make home for himself. What you will create, there you will live. Without censorship.

Sergei Makhno had left the workshop, where he both lived and worked (see Archidea, September 2009), and with his wife Vlada, for cases exclusively creative, moved here, in his new \”Parisian\” apartment. The apartment, actually, is in Kiev – but only geographically. Light negligence with which paintings are placed – hung, a bold combination of colors, the French panels, and uncovered artistry in the pseudo-classic’s entourage – immediately evoke images of the bohemian studios of Latin Quarter. However, to break stereotypes – is Makhno style. It is time to discard all complex and simply accept – in Ukraine we can do even more interesting and brighter design. Playing with textures, materials and color in his projects, Sergei constantly breaks the rules – he can put parquetry on the walls, or make «Tetris» game on the ceiling, from ordinary fluorescent lamps.
