EXTENSION AND MODERNIZATION OF THE GERMAN SCHOOL OF LISBON. 2003 – INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WITH PRE-SELECTION – 1st prize

When the German School of Lisbon was first built in 1961, architectural practice in Portugal was divided into Estado Novo architecture and a growing resistance to it, resulting from the 1st National Congress of Architecture in 1948, the creation of the Modern Architects Organization that same year, and the publication of the Popular Architecture Survey that took place between 1955 and 1961.

Kalmar Museum of Art in Stockholm archipelago, Sweden by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

On a remote island in the Stockholm archipelago, this small house is built within the context and specific conditions for construction that no car access for transports result in.  Around an central open space, four small rooms for sleeping, storage and bath are placed, one in each corner. Light enters through a skylight and large glazed niches that underscores the atelier like character of the central space, as it opens up toward the sky and its green environs in 360°.

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: no.555

The planning areas is a green hill with good views. There is next to the “Italian mountain garden”. However, there is a large housing complex on the south side. So, we want to block out the sight , but to get the open feeling. The “needs and conditions” is contradictory. Therefore, we decided to be a big void enclosing vertically or horizontally. It shut out the external eye, light and wind can achieve. The Void is provided on each floor. And there is provided a lot of planting, will be filled with greenery. This building looks like a planter. The concrete exterior walls generate the lye by plywood. It has deliberately transferred.

Calamari Union in Turku, Finland by LRA

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: LRA

The project responds to a new demand of making a city outside of the city. How must we design places to live in contexts not yet settled? Limen in Latin means limit, but also threshold, entrance. It is therefore in the etymology of this word that the premises are found for what can become a place of boundary, not to be intended as a barrier, but as an opportunity of connection. How are the limits of cities emancipated? Identity of living. That is the first reaction that the new settlement proposes to promote.

Vittra Telefonplan in Stockholm, Sweden by Rosan Bosch

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: Rosan Bosch

How do you create a school without any walls? In the 30 schools of the Swedish free school organisation Vittra there are no classes or classrooms – instead, the students are taught in groups according to level based on the school’s pedagogical principles of ’the wateringhole’, ’the show-off’, ’the cave’, ’the campfire’ and ’the laboratory’ – didactic approaches that create different types of learning and teaching situations. In Vittra, they do not believe in regular classes and the school organisation’s vision is to create an everyday for the individual students where individual development, a living cultural work and challenging learning environments are most important.

Revitalisation of the Crucifix Bastion in Horská ulice, Czech republic by MCA atelier

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: MCA atelier

PREVIOUS STATE
Though itself of Baroque date, Bastion XXXI is a part of the medieval fortifications of the New Town of Prague, founded in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV. The need for unconquerable fortifications was strengthened by the presence of the Cathedral of Charlemagne at the point of the bastion. Along with the fortress of Vyšehrad, another significant monument of the city fortifications, the ramparts form a significant defensive complex, yet one hidden beneath the later layers of the contemporary built fabric of central Prague, now a UNESCO heritage site. The area of former gardens within the ramparts was left untouched since the 14th century, first as reserve land and later ignored even as the city expanded over the centuries.

Isleta Tribal Services Complex in Pueblo of Isleta, New Mexico by Rohde May Keller McNamara Architecture

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Article source: Rohde May Keller McNamara Architecture

“Rhythm in Steel as an Aesthetic Experience”

Established in the 14th century, Isleta Pueblo maintains strong ties to traditional values. The Tribal Services Complex is located in the foothills between the Rio Grande Bosque and Manzano Mountains, and is strategically placed in a natural depression, flanked by two preserved promontories. The complex co-locates Fire, Police, E911, Courts, Council, Administration, Wellness and Vehicle Fleet. Lower levels house public safety and tribal leadership, while the upper plaza level/s serve public needs. The architectural imprint acknowledges an ephemeral existence – to blend harmoniously with the land through time. The aim was to create a sense of unity around a center and acknowledge tradition:

gathering (proto-urban assemblages around a “middle place”)
    alignment (sun, moon, sacred directions)
    harmony with natural surroundings (earth-water-air-fire-spiritual)
prehistory (function & belief based architectural chronology)
