At the top of Norway, Hammerfest presents itself as the world’s northernmost town and a natural centre of the region. In addition to the proximity to the North Cape, this establishes it as one of the most important tourist destinations in Northern Norway, with over 250.000 visitors each year. The project is a part of the bigger seafront development and is highly visible from both land and sea.
Theo Mathijssen of the firm ‘reSET architecture’ designed the renovation and extension of a small decaying farmhouse with a beautiful apple orchard, located in an idyllic location in the Dutch Betuwe region. The simplicity and sobriety of the farmhouse is revealing much about life in the past in this area and how a peasant family and their livestock must have lived here under one roof. This narrative quality does not make the building a monument which must be preserved as it is. It’s the self-evident presence in its surroundings that make the farmhouse distinctive and worth preserving.
Club Octagon answers the client brief of renovating 2640m2 over two levels of gutted hotel basement to create a high tech auditorium, club, lounge and restaurant that put music and peoples’ experience first. Urbantainer developed a new type of multi-space for entertainment, socializing, and subculture that was lacking in the South Korean market. Conceptually every detail of Club Octagon works with the octagonal form from the corporate identity, including the layout, 4D Media Lighting, modular seating, to even the ice buckets in each of the VIP rooms.
This project has about 400,00 m², seeks to bridge the gap with various levels of the ground, where the rooms of the house will be setting. The design proposal indicates a longitudinal implantation, creating a beautiful view of the back, closing the street view from the rest of the house, where the service area and kitchen are built.
We started by joining six adjacent plots that had development potential, and designed an urban complex of mixed uses: public parking, shops, offices and housing. Our idea was adding new buildings to the existing ones and build housing projects facing the residential area of the Colonia Condesa, and commercial projects facing Insurgentes Avenue, one of Mexico City’s main avenues. This way, access to the apartments is always through the residential neighborhood while access to the other programs is through Insurgentes Avenue. We took into account the adjacent establishments, such as Centro Qi (a gym/spa) –which we also designed– and the bakery El Molino, and we projected a commercial space with parking that could operate integrally with these amenities.

The house is situated on a corner plot with some good views over the distant landscape. In order to enjoy these views and avoid the neighboring buildings, the ideal configuration for the house was to create a compact form of cross which is placed at the center of gravity of the plot. The four wings are oriented in a way that ensures the selected views from inside the house.
