Innovation Tower in Hong Kong, China by Zaha Hadid Architects

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects
More projects by Zaha Hadid

Our designs dissolved the classic typography of tower and podium to create a seamlessly fluid new structure – establishing a vision for future achievements and referencing the university’s rich tradition. Conceptually, the university’s many different programs provided a guiding principle – ‘collateral flexibility’ – governing the tower’s internal logic.

Cocoon in Zurich, Switzerland by Camenzind Evolution

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Article source: Camenzind Evolution

Cocoon is located in Zurich’s Seefeld district on a beautiful hillside, which enjoys excellent lake and mountain views. The location’s distinctive flair stems from the exceptional park-like setting – a green oasis into which Cocoon snugly nestles. Flanked on three sides by mighty, age-old trees the elliptical structure reads as a freestanding sculptural volume that gracefully spirals up from the park. The stainless steel mesh enveloping the building combines visual privacy with restrained elegance, while establishing a strong and unmistakable presence.

More projects by Zaha Hadid

Created as a nexus for academic study, research and policy making, our design finds harmony between natural and imposed landscapes – producing a building that emerges fluidly from its surrounds. A building that flows upwards, which is both open and spacious despite the constricted space it occupies.

The Issam Fares Institute (IFI) for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut serves students and academics while also providing a powerful nexus for local, regional and international researchers, thinkers and policy makers.

Oberglatt Gymnasium Extension in Zurich, Switzerland by kit

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Article source: kit

After a fire destroyed the foyer of the gymnasium in Oberglatt, Switzerland, the city council asked for a new extension to the remaining parts of the building. The proposal by kit architects, which took the second prize in the competition, seamlessly connects to the existing structure, through program, space and form. Old and new dissolve into one, giving the building from the 70ties a distinct new identity. The cross section of the old sports hall with its ridged roof is most characteristic. Its ridge and eaves are extended and transformed into a welcoming gesture for the entrance within four descending steps, incidentally creating a series of skylights. The front facade is triangulated and recessed to create a covered zone leading into the building.

The single-family detached house is located in Magdeburg in a quiet residential area behind the “MDCC Arena”. A Mediterranean courtyard layout with parking spaces, a double garage and the house entrance opens up here. Cypress trees planted in a white pebble bed limit the visual axes to the east. The entrance area is accessible from here, protected against the weather by the one meter over-hanging upper floor. Directly from the vestibule are accessible the guest toilet and the building services room. An air heat pump was installed here as heating system.
