Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

The structure of the two residential blocks is an intervention in the centre of Rotterdam, a city that is naturally incised by a network of flowing waters. The site of the project is an old commercial trade grounds. The emerging scenery is therefore one of compatibility, and the coexistence of the old and the new.

The New York Public Library by 1100 Architect

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Article source: 1100 Architect

This 10,500-square-foot library, which occupies the bottom two floors of a residential highrise development in Battery Park City, was commissioned to meet the needs of a new and rapidly growing community. As a new branch without an ingrained pattern of community use, it was critical for the design to establish a presence that would attract visitors. Open, bright spaces create a welcoming environment for the public, while the design of book and periodical displays, information desks, and furniture facilitates the most efficient circulation. The folded planes of the ceiling guide the visitor’s eye through the library and acts as a physical and visual unifier for the entire space. The most eco-friendly of the New York Public Library branches, the project utilizes numerous sustainable design strategies and is on track to receive LEED Gold certification.

Nieuw Leyden – V23K16 Four Seasons

Up until recently it was rather unusual that unprofessional clients would initiate private housing projects in Dutch inner cities. For a short time the Dutch government strives to change this tendency. In 2002 the Ministry of Housing passed a bill that from 2005 onwards 30% of the new buildings in the Netherlands must be developed by private clients. The development of the former slaughterhouse area in the historical city centre of Leiden, the Netherlands oldest university town, is the most representative example of its kind.

Soft, dynamic tectonic turns establish the new Civil Courts of Justice as a pivotal point for an urban masterplan – horizontal shifts in mass generate ‘elasticity’, drawing visitors to a structure which ‘floats’ above ground plain – shifting metallic panels animate the façade – a spiraling atrium within curls around a public courtyard.

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Article source: NOA Architect & Associates

The site is located on elevated ground in Izumi Ward, Yokohama City, with a panoramic view toward the southwest of the mountain range as well as Mount Fuji. The main exterior concept of this house is simplicity and abstraction of daily life. The husband, an outdoor enthusiast, requested a garage space for both a car and a bicycle. When entering the house, visitors are greeted by a large Profilit glass wall. An indoor courtyard was built in such a way as to be enclosed by the glass wall, offering the viewer an unexpected surprise from its exterior conditions.

Article source: FLAT Architects

A reinterpretation of the ateliers on the Zomerdijkstraat
Atelier Havoc Milk has been constructed on a scale 1 : 2 as part of the exhibition atelier Malkovich concerning the future atelier. Instead of starting from scratch, the design is all about the reinterpretation of the monumental atelier/habitats on the Zomerdijkstraat in Amsterdam (1932-1934). The archetypical atelier with its high ceilings and northern light has got great qualities. The ateliers on the Zomerdijkstraat possess these qualities and rest on a famous artist’s tradition. It would be a shame to ignore this archetypical monument when building an atelier for the future.
