The Hirschkron/Camacho apartment is uniquely located in the East Village within a converted synagogue, the former Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Anshe Ungarn. The clients, although enamored with the apartments history and distinct spatial qualities, were at odds with the outdated 80s conversion, odd angles and inefficient layout.

They wanted to embrace the attributes of the apartment (double-height ceilings, private terrace, open floor plan) while focusing on sustainable materials and finishes where possible. Responding to the space and the clients needs, the design was therefore conceived through a a few calculated moves. By removing undesirable, angled built-ins, relocating the master bathroom to the top floor and subtly shifting functions to the perimeter, we created a spatial clarity required to enhance the aspects of the space. A continuous flow of movement starts with a custom-built angled unit that houses the stair, powder room, wine refrigerator and audio system.

From there it leads up to a mezzanine library with hidden walk-in closet behind the shelves. Up another flight of stairs is where you encounter a curved fritted-glass bathroom and the master bedroom that leads out to a terrace of overlapping wood surfaces. In combination with glass rails and walls, the three levels of living become a continuous connection, both physically and visually.

An addition of an all-glass façade and sliding door system also created an indoor-outdoor connection between the master bathroom, bedroom and terrace. Low VOC paints and finishes were used throughout the space. Upgrading the insulative qualities using low-e, double-paned glass and planting a perimeter of greenery while also upgrading to a more energy-efficient HVAC system is also key to the design. Ultimately the apartment becomes an oasis within the dense urban fabric of Manhattan.
