Akron Twin Residences in Pacific Palisades, California by Predock_Frane Architects

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Article source: Predock_Frane Architects

This project is located in the Palisades, a hilly region between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains within an existing 1950’s housing development. The project consists of two twin houses sited adjacent to each other on a steep slope above a seasonal watershed. In this project we were interested in exploring the intersection of two classic California building typologies; the courtyard house and the hillside house. This intersection was then further complicated by the overlay of two unsynchronized jurisdictional height envelope parameters that very explicitly controlled the volumetric limits of the structures.

Rutherford House in Oruatua, New Zealand by Dorrington Architects & Associates

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Article source: Dorrington Architects & Associates

Boxes form the basis of this intriguing modern holiday house…. bold forms and stark lines create an overall effect, which is solid without being monumental. Glass curtain walls create opportunities to bring the outdoors in and to incorporate internal building elements into the geometry of the structure.

1:1 Exhibiting Space in Romania by UNULAUNU

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Article source: UNULAUNU

The premise of the project entitled “1:1”, exhibited in the Romanian Pavilion from Giardini di Castello, is a radical one: architecture as translation of a unique idea, ultimately determining and defining the space we inhabit. The concept is to “exhibit space” and, by doing so, to explore its various instances. A precise and quantifiable fact is related to the idea of “space”: 94.4 m2 person is the population density level in Bucharest. This is a specific and local relation that represents the urban condition in Romania. It illustrates, at the same time, both an individual and a collective state of existence.

LOG by Abrahams May Architects

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Article source: Abrahams May Architects

LOG seeks to address the scale of the typical s’chach roof found on Sukkot. Typically the s’chach roof is an assemblage of branches, small sticks, and other plant material. LOG exaggerates the scale of these members into one piece that is able to provide shade for the inhabitants. As a means of showcasing this element, the walls become 4 pieces of 1” thick glass, with no other columns or supports, so the log foundation floats above. The two programmatic devices: a table and a candle, are elegantly hung from above. Above all the design shows a simplicity of concept, impeccable craft, and a restraint against excessive assemblages.

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

In sharp contrast to the basic rectangular geometry of its surroundings, our design proposes a structure punctuated by fluid horizontal louvres, which seem to move when graced by light and shade – issuing a playful invitation to enter – moving upwards to culminate in a gracious curving roof-line.

Extension of primary school Tagliaferro in Florence, Italy by Fabio Capanni

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Article source: Fabio Capanni

A new volume, modest in size and designed to accommodate the canteen for the young pupils, implants itself in the pavilion system of the nursery school Tagliaferro, situated in San Piero a Sieve in the district of Florence. It lives as a fragment, working by difference towards the existing building although striving to be its own harmonious extension. Assuming the continuity with the logic of the pavilion system composition, the difference in materials between the brick-faced previous building and the plastered surfaces of the new construction, produces a tension intended to reestablish an interrupted dialogue with the site to which this architecture belongs. The stereometry of the diaphanous volumes, serene and austere reflection of the life that, in time, gave form and significance to those  lands, aspires to live again in the bare plaster and wood surfaces set to enclosure the geometrical space of the canteen.

Bar “La Bohème Entre Amis” in Porto, Portugal by AVA Architects

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Article source: Atelier Veloso Architects

The Bar “La Bohème” (entre amis) is located in the “Galeria de Paris” street, amidst the downtown area of Porto. The redesign sought to implement and structuralize the space, creating its own identity. The solution was formalized through the texture and the colour of the wood, which defines the space and provides depth to the structure’s design. This structure, which was placed along the corridors and namely at the walls and ceiling, allows to subvert the whole appearance of the space, appealing to its visitors sense of discovery.
