The latest in a series of strategic development and planning initiatives by BMC, this ambulatory building embodies the hospital’s mission to provide “exceptional care, without exception.” Located on a highly visible site, the nine story building represents the first phase in a long term effort by Boston Medical Center to transform the image of its Albany Street campus edge. The building will set the stage for future improvements along Albany Street, including a provision for easier pedestrian access and a better defined, active street edge.

Neues Stadt-Casino in Basel, Switzerland by Zaha Hadid Architects

More projects by Zaha Hadid

An L-shaped volume that gives a new identity to the Stadt-Casino, enclosing the existing music hall and connecting it with the adjacent Hans Huber Hall. This homogeneous, plastic volume is differentiated and articulated by bulging and inverting its surface, enclosing ‘foreign bodies’ and hollowing it out to create a generous entrance hall.

The façade of the old music hall and the Hans Huber Hall create the main façade for the Neues Stadt Casino along the Steinenberg. The continuation of the two buildings, highlighted by a cut or slice, allows the front surface of the new building to become cohesive whilst the new volume remains sufficiently distanced from the existing building.

Agora Sociocultural Center in A Coruña, Spain by Rojo/Fernandez-Shaw, Arquitectos

Article source: Rojo/Fernandez-Shaw, Arquitectos

An Agora must be an accessible and open space for people’s meeting and their civic expression. This public and collective character makes architecture face to a double challenge:

On the one hand, its program is complex and multiple, covering from culture, administration, meeting, spectacle and social services.

On the other hand, even being a building, its true vocation is linked and close to the concept and qualities of a square.

Pavilion “O” in Sinaia, Romania by UNULAUNU

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Article source: UNULAUNU

The installation occupies and defines a Space. A series of elements, following one rule, defining in this way an ideal limit, an object perceived as a precise place, the “O” pavilion, positioned independently of the deigned path of the Dimitrie Ghica park in Sinaia, occupies a fragment of it, proposing a new way of public interaction. The new object is placed in the same axe as the entrance if the Casino.

Two houses in Orsara, Italy by Raimondo Guidacci

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Article source: Raimondo Guidacci

The project concerns two small buildings situated in an irregular shape lot, near the old town of Orsara di Puglia, in a street characterized by different typologies of buildings.

The new buildings completed the block by filling the gap between the fronts on the two streets, left uncovered an internal area to brought light inside the two buildings and related them to each other. It is possible to divide the front of both houses in three elements: a basement made of brushed Apricena stone, a surface completely covered with oak boards, containing the entrances, and a white wall, without windows, for the front on Via Trento, while on Via Cadorna there are two balconies in stainless steel.

La Vinya Residence in Caldes de Malavella, Spain by Lagula Arquitectes

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Article source: Lagula Arquitectes

Life in La Vinya unfolds against the backdrop of a modern reinterpretation of the Palladian villa. Sensitivity is the keynote in expansive show villa in which outdoor and indoor spaces, patios, porches and pergolas extend outwards, mingling with the natural setting. It is where the bedroom terraces are built from stone that blends in perfectly with the surroundings and where the upper terraces and patios become vantage points, set within a landscape in which the house’s single volume rests, natural and abstract.

Coopers Beach House in Far North, New Zealand by Dorrington Architects & Associates

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Article source: Tim Dorrington Architects

This beach house has an overall feeling of simple restraint. Modest materials used in deceptively simple ways manipulate site, space and light to organise the “bach” in a straightforward, playful and inventive way. The surprise placement of circulation along the perimeter appears to have been the key move in unlocking the architectural solution.
