Jacob’s Ladder in Brooklyn, New York by BanG studio

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Article source: BanG studio

In conjunction with their participation in American Express’ Partners in Preservation program, Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn has commissioned BanG studio to design, fabricate, and erect an art installation inside the synagogue’s main sanctuary. The given theme of the piece is Jacob’s Ladder reflecting the synagogue’s special connection to the story.
In Genesis, Jacob stops for the night en route from the house of his father, Isaac to Paddan-aram. He dreams of a ladder set upon the earth and stretching to heaven. In his dream, angels ascend and descend the ladder. God appears to Jacob promising the land on which he sleeps to him and his descendants. When Jacob awakens he realizes that, “surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”

Sky SOHO in Shanghai, China by Zaha Hadid Architects

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

A design for a new office and retail destination that aims to provide a strong visual identity close to Hongqiao Transportation Hub near Shanghai’s city centre and Hongqiao Airport.

Our proposal for the new Linkong SOHO building aims to provide a strong visual and programmatic identity which establishes a unique destination in its own right. Such identity consists of an exclusive programme mix consolidated in three different destinations – thematic “Courtyards” – representing distinct clusters of activities, and an exceptional architecture that moulds such a programme into a landmark. The building’s dynamic, curvilinear form continues through its internal spatial experiences, dramatic courtyards and flowing public spaces.

Warburg House in Alberta, Canada by Bioi inc.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Bioi inc.

Seeking to architecturally balance the functional, the handsome, the efficient, and the economical is not an easy task; but this was the brief provided for the Warburg house. The question posed by the client was simple: can we provide a simple, contemporary, and energy efficient home for less than $100,000?

On a wooded Canadian farmstead, the new house replaces a dwelling that was no longer able to fulfill its function due to build quality and the strains of a working farm. The architectural concept was simple: open, flexible, and efficient.

Villa Saitan in Kyoto, Japan by Eastern design office

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Eastern design office

The site is in Nishioji-hachijo, Kyoto. From the main street we enter into a covert place along an alley of 4 meters in width. This construction is a collective housing consisting of 11 units.  The impersonality of segmental housing complex is completely concealed in this architecture.  Instead it is built to be seen as one big house. The architecture is covered with a wall in which holes are cut. The shape of the holes resembles a trunk, leaves, a root and bulbs. It also can be seen as clouds floating over the trees. Concrete shape which is based on nature turns into a hollow cave, light, and sunbeams filtered through trees.

Article source: Mecanoo architecten

The district of Sterrenburg is located on the south side of Dordrecht and was largely built during the 1960s and 1970s. It is a sizable district with 21,000 residents and a generous share of parks, gardens and other green areas; it is also very close to the historical natural conservancy areas on the ‘Island’ of Dordrecht. The new building for KIEM will be built on the northern edge of the area on the De Sitterstraat. The school’s joint name covers five separate branches of education, care and medical science. De Vlij is a ‘Mytyl’ school for children with a physical disability or multiple disabilities, the Blije Gaarde, a school for children with serious learning issues and the Dordtse Buitenschool for children with long-term illnesses.

The Elwood House is a new residential dwelling with a separate garage and studio to the rear. The client’s brief was for a modern family home that was interesting and exciting but not to the detriment of the comfort to the occupants and within a sensible budget. “The client wanted a house that was clean, distinctive and enjoyable to use without feeling like they were an object in their own home because it was of a contemporary design” says the architect, Patrick Jost.
