“California developers learned to build ‘green’ long before it was a buzzword for the industry, keeping current with updates to Title 24, the state’s 1978 energy code, voluntarily adopting Build It Green and USGBC LEED standards, and working with municipalities to meet local expectations for their projects,” said Dan Withee, founding partner of Withee Malcolm Architects. “CALGreen, the latest green building code, which went into effect in January of 2011, encompasses an even broader array of requirements than earlier codes; we work diligently to understand changing codes and standards to help our clients achieve the highest sustainable impact as cost effectively as possible.”

Collaborating with committed clients like AMCAL, Related California, MBK Homes and Watson Land,Withee Malcolm takes an integrated approach to the sustainable design beginning with site design and building orientation, incorporating a range of water and energy conservation features — from Energy Star appliances to solar panels — and specifying renewable, recyclable and local building products.

“Whether our clients are long-term owners or building for sale properties, there is an understanding that green design is good business,” notes Founding Partner Dale Malcolm. “Thoughtfully done sustainable buildings create healthier homes and workplaces, protect our environment and provide operational cost savings over time.”

Withee Malcolm Architects serves clients in the residential and commercial industrial markets throughout the West from their offices in Torrance, California.
