The 14th Street Y in New York, NY by Z-A Studio

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Article source: Z-A Studio

The design celebrates the biggest asset of the Y as a community facility; its diverse, multi generational user base. The identity of each programmatic space was enhanced, expressing multiplicity rather than institutional uniformity. The entry lobby, fitness center, locker rooms, studios, offices showers and pool are organized as a series of parallel bands. As members move through the different bands, they experience the immediacy of the simultaneous happenings that animate the building. The distinct character of the bands enables the modularity of the scheme, where one program space can be replaced by another (like slots in a computer) without compromising the integrity of the design.

Vars House in Madrid, Spain by Aceboxalonso

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Article source: Aceboxalonso

It is located on a hill, dominating the sights – Madrid is 12 km. far (or close) but the nearest context is understood as “natural”. It was a big house, and we wanted to make as small effect on the landscape as we could, but at the same time the landscape had to add a strong effect on the interior. No colors, no synthetic or “artificial” materials; as low as possible; the “profile” of the house had to talk the language  of the place as one more of the lines in the horizon.

Design Proposal Ljubljana Library in Ljubljana, Slovenia by BARCODE Architects

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Article source: BARCODE Architects

Prominently sited at a junction in the heart of perhaps the most important academic centre in Eastern Europe, the 20.000m2 NUK II building seeks to become a compelling architectural landmark. Although the given plot was of great complexity, the proposal of BARCODE Architects presents a clever and pure univocal shape. By making the design compact and by moving volume from its base to the top, the building makes way and shows the characteristic ruins of Roman Emona on site, while at the same time this creates a public square along the important city junction. The cantilevers created are aligned with the adjacent blocks to generate a uniform street view and a well-balanced town scape.

Article source: Kuno + Aida

A single-family residence located in a typical residential area, where two-story wooden houses are densely built. In order to obtain fine living environment while giving a minimum impact on the surroundings, we proposed a plan in which three volumes of the bedroom with the opening turned for the south are pulling out from the roof level as if they were a set of periscopes.

The New Milan Trade Fair is an impressive construction, with a 5-kilometer perimeter and a 1,000,000 m² built surface that rises on a 2,000,000 m² land surface.

The New Trade Fair is made of eight big monoplanar and biplanar pavilions that, together, make a gross expositive surface of about 345,000 m², plus 60,000 m² outdoors. The whole route is on two areas, the one of the East entrance and the one of the West entrance. All the accesses and the exits to the Fair are organized through them. The buildings have got different functions (services, snack points, offices, hotel, commercial gallery, receptions of the pavilions, smaller expositive spaces). The placement of the buildings on the central axis is on different surfaces among water pools, green areas and epoxy resin floorings.

Kirchplatz Office + Residence in Basel, Switzerland by Oppenheim Architecture + Design in collaboration with Huesler Architekten

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Article source: Oppenheim Architecture + Design

The design of this adaptive re-use project was born initially out of a design competition initiated by the City of Muttenz/Basel. The design was based on the renovation of an historic farmhouse situated within the historic center core of the city. The original farmhouse was constructed in 1743.  Today the converted farmhouse serves as an office for an architectural design company, provides community meeting space, and serves as a compelling link to a new, adjacent private residence.
