The monumental Tomado House in Dordrecht was desired to be given a third future. This was commissioned by the Swiss real estate company Züblin for whom EGM architecten has carried out a study in collaboration with a number of partners. In this study it was investigated how to transform the Tomado House into an office building of energy label A.

The Tomado House is designed by the renowned Dutch architect Huig Maaskant. The building is designed in 1958 and handed over in 1962 as the main office of the former Tomado Factory (household appliances). At that time, the building was the most modern building in the Netherlands. In the 1980’s the Tomado House went through a renovation. The then so flawless building concept largely disappeared and is up until this day, hard to see in the building.

EGM architecten has carried out this renovation study, in respect and reverence of the original concept of Huig Maaskant. The starting point was to honourably restore the quality of the past by making the correct choices. Therefore, the interventions of the 1980’s were to be removed, and where possible, the new building requirements and the fire safety requirements were integrated.

The core of the building, except from the existing lift core, was to be redesigned and revitalized in terms of obtaining comfort and convenience.

The ground floor of the main building is restored back to the original starting point, in order to make the transparency and spatial quality visible again. The facades of the hall and the main entrance of the building are again constructed as a solid glass walls. On the first floor the former opening between the first and second floor is reopened. Also, special consideration is given to the remarkable bay window in the South facade, which enables the experience of ”stepping out of the facade”.

On the floors the open work spaces, the carefully detailed glass partition walls and the access doors are honourably reinstated. Hereby is taken into account the possibility of creating various work landscape concepts.

It was a main goal in the study to make the building more sustainable and to reach a label A.  For this reason the existing installations are completely replaced and the complete external facade is insulated. Moreover, sustainable solutions such as cold and heat storage combined with CHP and concrete core activation will be taken into use. Hereby the Tomado House will comply with the contemporary requirements and desires regarding sustainability, and the office is ready for its third life.
