PLAY is the 21st century equivalent of what WORK was to the industrial age.

TREEHAUS is a breakthrough playspace that rethinks one of the most iconic and universal childhood activities – the tree house – by creating a 3-dimensional, immersive structure that children climb over, on, and inside of, allowing for a completely unstructured and child-directed free play.

Bodega in New York City by Art Meadow

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Article source: Matthew Hoffman

Historically, bodegas have served as social gathering centers for neighborhoods, going far beyond super markets and grocery stores by offering informal services like jobs connections and advice on finding apartments. Unfortunately, New York City’s bodegas have been closing by the hundreds over the past few years, not being able to compete with big chain stores like CVS and Duane Reade. Business Insider published a startling statistic that “in 2010 on a 33-block stretch of Broadway alone there were 137 store closures.”

Ersamus MC in Rotterdam, Netherlands by EGM architecten

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Article source: Ronald Schlundt Bodien

The new Erasmus MC, right in the middle of Rotterdam, is undergoing work. It was a deliberate choice to keep the new building in the heart of the city and not to construct it at the outer circle. Now a hospital rises up with its urban building structure, adding a number of green spaces in the city. As far as the design and facilities are concerned, the Erasmus MC will be able to fully meet expectations by putting its main focus on the independence and well-being of the patient. With this in mind, the structure of the new medical centre is divided into sections based on a number of patient themes which stretch out from the atrium, the centre of each theme. This design provides a logical format in which all the coordinating treatment areas are close together making it easy for the patients to find their way around.

Building For Bouwkunde by Gijs Raggers

THE CONFUSION OF THE BIG NUMBER

Twentieth century Dutch architecture was dominated by the challenge of the era: large scale housing. Berlage, Granpre Molière, Oud and van Eesteren. Every decade its own urbanism and architecture. WWII did not change this pattern. Pendrecht, Bijlmer, Tanthof, Prinsenland. Looking back at these hundred years one might think the experiment is the basis of both architecture and urbanism. It is not.
