Article source: Valle Architetti Located in an area on the border between the suburbs of Udine and the countryside, the new Municipal Bowling Hall of Udine in Cussignacco is a category “A – systems for high performance” facility for playing bowls, comparable to a sports complex dedicated exclusively to this sporting activity. The building contains various spaces in a single envelope with a variable profile that dynamically expresses the internal organization and, at the same time, dialogues with the surrounding countryside. The longitudinal axis of the structure, which has a trapezoidal plan, is oriented in an east-west direction and has a variable section lit by natural light from above. Two external parallel walls and the curvilinear profile, clad with aluminium panels on the undulating surface, indicate the different interior heights. For those arriving from afar, this profile rises above a wood of trees that dot the public car park and stands out against the backdrop of the Alps. Two openings in the aluminium walls give access to some open-air patios which introduce the public entrances. There are 400 seats in the stands around the tracks, offices for the regional and provincial committees of the Italian Bowling Federation as well as meeting rooms with 70 seats accessible to the public and other support rooms. The various areas form an interior marked by roofs, heights and different degrees of overhead natural light. The entrance, offices, games area and changing rooms are visually connected along the longitudinal east-west axis and form a clear and legible succession marked by a increasing amount of overhead light. The structure is mixed with reinforced concrete walls and floors for the entrance area, offices and meeting room and for the changing room area; the central games area instead has been built with a covered metal frame and reticular beams that form the sawtooth roof.
