gmp wins Competition for Kunsthalle Mannheim

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have been awarded the contract to design the new Kunsthalle Mannheim. This was the decision made by the Kunsthalle‘s jury in Mannheim on Monday 3 December 2012. After three architect’s practices were awarded first place in a closed, anonymous competition back in July 2012, these practices were asked to revise their designs. The practices were gmp, Staab Architects and Peter Pütz Architects. Irrespective of the negotiation procedure, an exhibition started in October at which the public were able to familiarize themselves with the three winning entries.

Tåkern Visitor Centre in Glänås, Sweden by Wingårdh Arkitektkontor AB

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Article source: Wingårdh Arkitektkontor

All the way out where the forest ends and the reeds begin, a visitor center hovers low on piles set carefully into the water’s edge. The building is clad in thatch, camouflaged like a birdwatcher’s blind, hiding its contents from the natural world that surrounds it. This is quiet architecture, using traditional local materials to break new ground with its crystalline geometry. Steep roofs transition seamlessly into walls. The steep pitch gives them longevity. The ridge, where a thatched roof is most vulnerable, is transformed into a glazed skylight.

Shining Lighthouse in Belfort, France by archi5 with B. Huidobro

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Article source: archi5

The town of Belfort was founded to control the pass between the Vosges and the Jura. The original pentagonal structure was designed by Vauban in 1687 and completed and reorganised by General Haxo. Fort Hatry, where the new sports hall is located, was once part of the city’s defences. The shape of the fortifications was not so much a result of the orthogonal shape of the city but a response to the art of warfare at the time: defence and control of movement using the traditional configuration of edges and folded walls. Since the military abandoned the fortress it has become a recreational park used for open-air events with temporary structures such as fairgrounds or circuses.

Article source: Gemelli Design

The Bath is very important room in the house and is probably the only one place for staying alone, relaxing, thinking and dreaming.

We chose the name H2O in geometry, because water is a leading element in the idea of our Bath project. It represents the natural connection between this room and the man.

Multipurpose Hall Finca del Lomo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain by Equipo Olivares Arquitectos

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Article source: Equipo Olivares Arquitectos

This small intervention, in the middle of a banana plantation, is inspired by the particular environmental conditions to respond to an elementary program. This construction, vibrated concrete blocks embedded in one of the greenhouses, required special treatment for it´s purpose as a  flexible space destined to a variety of events. Therefore, the promoters proposed us to qualify an unfinished building on a site with spectacular scenic values.
