Weekend Houses in Ahmedabad, India by Vipul Patel Architects (VPA)

The site of the weekend house is located in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The houses were to be designed for two friends, in the same plot. The purpose of the house was that of a weekend or a farmhouse, which later on could be used as a permanent residence too. Both the houses were designed very similar to each other, on the client’s demand.

The long open corridor through the landscaped area, from the parking to the entrance plaza, captures the essential characteristic of a weekend house. The walk through that pathway leads you to 2 houses sitting in a plot of 3600 smt.
A very prominent double height entrance foyer with a cantilever glass canopy, along with a waterbody enhances the aesthetic appeal of the houses and gives you a warm welcome.

A Cascade fall resides on the low height wall, dividing the house from the landscaped area and directs you to enter the house.
As you move forward, you enter the living room with full height glass partitions, which opens into the huge veranda and finally ends up in the landscaped garden.

This veranda also acts as a buffer space, as the living room is situated in the western part of the house. The first floor, in both the houses, also bears huge verandas to intact the distinctive feature of a weekend house. Fluidity in the inner spaces, of the houses, was particularly worked on.

To achieve this, I have provided the house with the minimum number of partitions and hindrances while moving from one space to another. Another important element of the house is its cantilever stairs, which creates double heights around the dining area. The cantilever structure was is a combination of RCC paddi along with fabricated steps and bridge.
