The IUFM (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres – Primary School Teacher Training Institute) is located in the former Ecole Normale pour Garçons, a building dating from 1885 in a large property called Clos Fayet in the Croix-Rousse district of Lyon. This building has all the architectural features of the typical late 19th century to mid-20th century French school. It has been inopportunely encroached upon by recent constructions.

The design on the east side of  Havixhorst has several specializations received. This is also the facade that the first and lasting impression on the unsuspecting careless or even architecture interested passerby will leave. Listed façade has been given a subtle nod which lays the foundation for further morphological development of the property as we will see later. For specification of the entrance is locally a bite out of the volume taken as a welcoming gesture. Moreover, here you are protected against all kinds of meteorological events.

The exterior of the project in dialogue with the interior.
The architectural context has influenced the design of interior spaces in two ways: positively and negatively; the building it is not exactly an office building, quite the opposite, because there are no requirements such as flexibility and efficiency. So, we found in the site unusual features in 99% of the offices. I mean double-height spaces, or plan without large rectangular areas and depth, that could suggest us some different lay out.

Mosquito Coast Factory in Campbon, France by Tolila+Gilliland

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

Article source: Tolila+Gilliland

This is not a shed. This is an island. The question posed by the client/artist was the possibility of a cultural island in an industrial site, the concrete fabrication of a utopic site for living, research and production. The architectural response is the result of a research towards a vocabulary of elements which could give meaning to this ambition.

The Olympic View House house is a two story home designed for a couple newly retired from careers in academia on the East Coast of the United States. The site constraints included steep slopes, drainfield setbacks and a zoning variance. The resultant building footprint reflects these constraints in a manner which ultimately accommodated the Owner’s goals for the house. The house is 2,700 sf and includes all main floor living for day to day functions for aging in place. The upper floor consists of a media area, office, piano and guest bed/bath rooms.

Creating the Nexus for Detroit’s Techtown in Michigan by Payette

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

Article source: Payette

Successful innovation districts are not comprehensively designed from the outset; they mature over time, taking advantage of emerging local talent pools and evolving business clusters of excellence. Nexus, a plan to create an innovation district in Midtown Detroit focuses on proximity, talent growth, culture, and urban density – qualities intensely destabilized in the wake of the city’s economic decline.
