Eurostars Book Hotel in Munich, Germany by Rieder Smart Elements GmbH

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Rieder Smart Elements GmbH

The fibreC glassfibre reinforced concrete facade of the Eurostars Book Hotel in Munich is part of a marvellous design idea. The architecture of the building tells its very own story of books as cultural objects. Every floor reflects a literary genre, whereas rooms and corridors are dedicated to famous works. Rieder’s ingeniously formed facade elements represent the turning pages of books, whilst also providing protection from direct solar exposure. A specially developed process allows for manufacturing glassfibre reinforced concrete as round moulds, making individual facades, like the book pages of the Eurostars Book Hotel, possible.

Vi-Sang House in Gyeonggi-do, Korea by Moon-Hoon

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Moon-Hoon

These are the questions that Korean architect Hoon Moon typically throws out: ‘Why so serious? Why not laugh more?’ Moon-Hoon’s works are home to a wide array of faces. Panorama House appears to be an accordion, and Rock It Suda looks like spermatozoa. He shows a mysterious spacecraft (ongdalsam) and a Gothic castle (Sangsang Museum). Some may burst out laughing at the Darth Vader image overlying Play House.

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Andrew Maynard Architects

These neighboring terrace homes are owned by two generations of one family. Both houses were in need of repair and update. HOUSE House is a single building that extends both homes. They are separate homes within one architecture. The new structure runs north/south while the original houses run east/west. The fence between each terrace slides away to create one large backyard.

GP House in Hidalgo, Mexico by Bitar Arquitectos

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Bitar Arquitectos

GP House has all the basic requirements of a residential home, foyer, living room, dining area, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 3 ½ bathrooms, studio, laundry, three-car garage, maid’s quarter, spread over two floors and connected by vertical staircase to break up the home’s dominant horizontal construction. This juxtaposition is even more striking with the use of a local stone as a finish on the cube stairs against its concrete structure.

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Rodrigo Mindlin Loeb + Eduardo de Almeida

Eduardo de Almeida e Rodrigo Mindlin Loeb sign the design of Brasiliana Library. The building, with more than 20.000 m², will house a rare books collection of 17 thousand titles about Brasil donated by the books collector to the university. At the end of 1999, José Mindlin transferred to his grandson, Rodrigo Mindlin Loeb, and to his friend Eduardo de Almeida, a mission: develop and move forward the idea and design of the library to house the rare collection of books – the biggest and most important private collection of Brasil with around 17 thousand titles and 60 thousand volumes – which he has donated to the university of São Paulo (USP). When Mindlin died, in february 2010, with 95 years old, the construction works advanced over the funding and political difficulties, and the conclusion was only a matter of time.

Airbaltic Passenger Terminal in Riga, Latvia by MSB Arquitectos + ahad Arquitectos

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: MSB Arquitectos + ahad Arquitectos

This work opens our participation with ahead – architects, based in London, a studio which we now have a partnership. Our scheme sets the terminal building in the middle of the two piers, demonstrating a strong connection with both of them. The continuous language of form, materials and expression shape both interior and exterior of the terminal. Further-more, the proposed design is intended to be read as one object; one entity where both piers play an inner complicity.

Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, Lansdowne Park in Canada by Cannon Design

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Article source: Cannon Design

Lansdowne Park is an historic sports, exhibition and entertainment facility in Ottawa’s urban center. An integral part of the city’s history, it features the aging 24,000-seat Frank Clair Stadium and other entertainment venues. The City of Ottawa embarked upon a major redevelopment, renovating the stadium and the heritage buildings on the site and adding 300,000 sf of new retail space. The renovated stadium can expand to 45,000 seats, enabling it to host national and international events. The stadium’s porous, accessible design encourages the intersection of people and built form.
